Re: long island living but working early morning the city
me and my husband live in nassau and we commute on the 5:37am train out of the mineola train station every morning. Do you have to be into the city at 5:30 or leave by 5:30? If you stay close to the city border and a main train station line like mineolal, there are a lot of trains out and back. there is an even earlier one I believe it's like a 4:50am out of Mineola as well that I use to take. It's def tough but the train ride into the city from Mineola is about 45min.

Have you considered a town like Bayside in Queens? The LIRR goes directly to Penn station- I do not know if there are express trains at the time you will be traveling but the express is a really fast commute.

I used to have to be in at 7am and I used to drive in. Traffic wasn't too bad then

I know people. A lot of them just drive in.
Often they have rotating schedules though and it's not every day they need to be there that early.
I'd imagine it would be something you would get used to though.
Is there a particular town you are considering?
It may be helpful to find out where people live and how early the trains leave.

My husband has a varied schedule, but has to be in between 5-11. he loves the early starts because there is no traffic. if he has to be in NYC at 6, he will leave my house in Wantagh a little before 5. He drives in.

I have to be at work at 5:30. We live in Brooklyn now and house hunting. But nuttin good has came our way in Brooklyn ever since the hurricane. We were thinking about trying to look in LI. We only have one car right now. So for me to drive to the city i would have to buy another car. We do not exactly have a area we were looking in yet because we do not know if we are ready to move to LI. We are still young and both our families live in Brooklyn and we dont have children yet. My SIL lives in Massapequa and would love to live there but there is not train when I would need to be at work those days I have to work 5:30. This job isnt a forever job but i have to have it until i find something else.

Honestly, I'd probably not do anything at this point, until you know more about what your job situation is going to be.
Massapequa is a nice area too (I live not too far away) and an easy commute to the city in general, if you have more "normal" hours.
If you think you may want to live in the suburbs in the next couple of years vs. the city, I still think it's worth the wait.

We live in lynbrook our commute into Penn is 35 min. We are within walking distance to the stop. I am an RN and when I worked in the city had EARLY hours and never had a problem. DD takes the earliest train as well every day for 7 years. Doable! Have you considered Lynbrook?

Tons of houses are coming onto the market in Brooklyn right now. I'm there once a week and constantly see new things popping up. If you're able to afford a house in Brooklyn, I'd look for one a bit longer. DH and I would have loved to buy in Brooklyn, but we didn't see anything for less than the high 7s when were were buying, and that was way over our budget.

I agree I think it's definitely doable, Just locate areas close to the train with times that fit your needs for the train as well as your budget...good luck!
