Pros and Cons on living on the island?
Someone askes me about living on LI and wanted to know what i liked and didn't like about the island. So my ? to you is the same. Your pros and cons.

Depends what part.
I live in Nassau and I love it. I live right off Hempstead turnpike so there's so much to do. I like how late most places stay open (something you dont always find somewhere else), I like being close to the city, I love being close to Roosevelt Field, there are many good school districts.
Property taxes can be high...currently we rent, but I know my parents pay upwards of 10k/year in property taxes in a nice nassau nieghborhood.

Ugh. One word.
Traffic.
I had to drive to work one day from exit 45 to NYC. I thought I would leave at 7:30. It was a parking lot from exit 45 to NYC.
Next time, left at 7am. Parking lot. 2 hours in
Next time left at 6:15. This time it only took me an hour.
The traffic in the moring is beyond words...its the worst thing.
I hate the LIE.

Pros:
Lots of stores/Malls close by
get to the ocean in less than 40 minutes
Beaches are beautiful
We have the best bagels and Pizza
We are fast paced.
Riding out east if you want peace and quiet
Great Parks
Cons:
Too Expensive
High Taxes
High Gas Prices
Expensive LIRR
JUST TOO MUCH MONEY!!!!

I'm relatively close to everything I could ever want.
Cons:
You can't escape if anything major happens
Traffic stinks
It's $$$ to live here

Pros:
-The advantage of being a commute into the city or a drive to the beach.
-my family is here
- people speak faster here. Sorry...I have issues.
- education is top notch
- people seem to be more ambitious here
Cons:
It's expensive.
Rojerono - you can join us on a boat if we need to get out.

This and there is always always TRAFFIC everywhere, its so infuriating. Drives that take 10 minutes end up taking an hour.
Another few that are often overlooked but I missed BIG time when I lived in Queens (Forest Hills)--
parking lots!

Honestly at this point, I feel like there are no pros to living here.
I'd never recommend for anyone I know to move to LI.
The cost of living is insane and not worth it, IMO.
Unless you make $200K+ you can't be comfortable here.
If it wasn't for DH's job, we'd be gone. He may have an OOS opportunity next year, and I'm really hoping it pans out.

nice size property (relative to Queens)
Great parks , beaches
great schools (main reason we are moving to LI fr. Queens)
Cons:
Financial quality of life
I feel like LI is a free for all as far as cost going up like Property tax, utility costs, LIRR , etc. LI is looked at as a piggy bank (less ppl to complain about the increases)

I really do hate living on Long Island, if I could I would live upstate and in 13.5 years when DH can retire, we intend to be out of here.
Pros:
the beach
convenience to NYC
close to family
Cons:
taxes
everything is expensive
it sucks trying get off Long Island

cons:
- traffic
- too much $$ to live here (but you can say the same for lots of areas around NYC)
- i agree with another posters comment of not being able to escape if something happens. It's a very real fear i have
- i didn't grow up here, so some of the 'expected' things i see people do, or the way they dress, or things they have are completely foreign to me and i find myself not wanting to bring up kids with those same values (but thats a whole other post)

It def. depends on the area. We live way out east, so traffic and overcrowding don't apply. I used to live in the suburbs of Baltimore and DC, they had the worse traffic, sprawl and overcrowding and now live in an area with a beautiful small town feel, great beaches and scenic farmlands. As a con, the cost of living is high.

Now that I'm a parent, I really don't see a heck of a lot of pros about living on LI.
The cost to just live within your basic needs and maybe put a little bit away each week here is ridiculous.
Originally coming from the Hudson Valley, seeing what kind of house in the $300K range buys you vs. what our $300K range bought us.............just makes me sick to my stomach.
Although I would venture to guess that on the other side, it may be difficult to find a job, or a job that pays what I make now in that area.
I often feel that outside of LIF, everyone in the "real" world of LI is just really self-absorbed, and in many cases nasty and rude.
Everyone is on top of each other.
There's a constant feeling of stress and anxiety.
Hard to meet people to mesh with IMO, especially if you aren't "from" here. A lot of people I come across have their ready-made group of friends since childhood.
Taxes are disgusting.

Pros
Good paying jobs for DH and myself
Close to wineries and beaches (but those exist in other places too - not unique to LI)
Cons
Overpriced housing
High taxes
High cost of living in general
Cablevision/Fios costs
Traffic and being trapped on the island - you get to pay to get on or off the island and sit in traffic too - going anywhere off the island takes over an hour to get off (or back on) due to traffic. We tend to stay put because it's such a PITA to travel on or off the island.
Litter and garbage - so many pigs here - having lived in other areas I notice it's so much worse here.
Jobs keep us here, and DH's family for now, but we will be leaving in the next 10 - 15 years.

My only pro would be my family is there...as well as good shopping.
But Cons certainly outweigh any pros I can think of. I was there over the weekend and the traffic was insane.

I live in Northern Queens, which while technically is LI, I always argue that it is not anywoo...
Pro's:
close to NYC
close to my job (work for the NYC DOE)
close to family and friends as I grew up here
great food
great shopping
diverse
always something to do
Con's:
Homes are very expensive
It is hard to get a decent lot size, even if you pay a lot of money
That is really it for cons. Basically if I were rich I would have no qualms
