So I went to Keens and Peter Luger within 42 hours of each other.

My husband and I go to NYC every few months for 2-3 nights and go on eating binges. This trip, we hit Ssam bar for pork buns (always need my pork bun fix when we go!), Keens for dinner, Il Mulino for lunch, Gallow Green for some small plates (before experiencing Sleep No More), and Peter Luger’s for lunch. I pretty much knew what to expect since I checked out the menu and read reviews for each place.

KEENS:
Walked into Keens at 9:00 on Thursday and was greeted by the host who seated us right away. The tables were super close. If you need to use the restroom, you would need to move the table to your neighbor’s table then decide whether your other neighbor should get your front or your back (I chose back). Anyway, we ordered a bottle of wine and then were given the menus. There was a nice selection of appetizers, main courses, sides, and even some specials. Here’s what we ordered:

clams on the half shell -fresh and the cocktail sauce was really good!
filets (both petit and regular size) medium rare, mashed potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, au poivre sauce—delicious! Melt in your mouth steak and creamy potatoes

We were done in an hour but still had some wine left. Since there were empty tables, I asked if we could sit for a bit with the wine before ordering dessert. Waiter said of course and would walk by every so often in case I needed to get his attention. My husband asked for the scotch list (it was huge!) and he fell in love with the 21 year old Balvenie Portwood.

We then had the bananas foster. (freakin’ fantastic!)

I left with a smile on my face. Well done Keen’s! We will be back! Chat Icon

PETER LUGER:
We had a 2:45 reservation at Peter Luger on Saturday and arrived at 2:10. We checked in at the host/cashier booth and were told they would call us when the table was ready. We sat at the bar and saw the two bartenders that looked like this: Chat Icon Chat Icon Stupid me asked if they had a drink menu and his response was no. No biggie, I'll just have wine with my meal.

Our name was called and we headed into the dining room. They had a small wine list (Is there a bigger one for dinner?) and we ordered a bottle (It was really good! 2009 Oakville cab sav). I already knew about the small menu so I knew I wasn’t getting mashed potatoes with my steak. The waiter was nice. Here is what we ordered:

Sizzling bacon—really good! The only thing that was annoying is that I was eating bread and had crumbs and butter on my bread plate. The waiter comes over with a tray of the sizzling bacon and put it on my bread plate (on top of the crumbs). I thought that was weird. Anyway, it was still good.

Porterhouse for 2 cooked rare (or close enough to rare)—I liked it. I’m not sure that I needed all of that butter but it was good.

German fried potatoes-I’ve had better at a diner.

Hot fudge sundae-it was good-maybe I was just too stuffed to enjoy it.

When the check came I explained that I was going to use my debit card. The waiter said I just needed to go to the cashier booth to enter my PIN. I went to pay (IHOP style) but didn’t know if I was next on line since there was a crowd of people waiting to check in. My waiter called me over to the cashier and stood next to me as the curt cashier (another one with a Chat Icon face) said, “You put tip on card!!?” I replied yes, she quickly snaps, “How much!!?” (remember, my waiter is standing next to me like he’s my date.) I tell her the amount and my waiter date turns to me and says, “thank you!” That was really bizarre experience. Did he think I wasn’t going to tip?

So, I learned that I am definitely more of a Keens girl.

Great reviews! Keens is seriously the sh!t! They would have let you sit there for 6 hours if you wanted too. AMAZING food and service. Glad you enjoyed it Chat Icon

IMO Keens blows Peter Lugers away on all counts.
Food, service, everything.
Peter Lugers is just WAY overrated IMO.
Almost like a tourist trap

Haha! yes!! He knows I hate scotch but insisted that I smell first and then let a drop hit my lips. The smell was typical scotch smell but the taste was kinda floral and fruity. I think The Wine Guy in Smithtown has it for $170 (but they were out of it yesterday).

Gallow Green is beautiful! I wasn't crazy about the food though. We started with a popsicle punch bowl for $45-it came with two popsicles. The first few ladles of punch were ok but it got worse as the popsicles melted. The waiter (he was a sweetheart) suggested we get the quiche but it was pretty gross-we didn't finish it. We also ordered a cuban sandwich and that hit the spot for the amount of hunger we had. The unisex bathrooms smelled like pee. We would probably just have drinks at the bar next time. It had lots of plants and was really pretty all lit up at night.

I definitely want to go back to Sleep No More. I will need to wear better shoes next time. About an hour into it, I stumbled on something and my left flip flop snapped!Chat Icon (The part that goes between the toes came out of the sole.) I was able to keep it on since there was a band going across to kinda keep my foot in. I was still able to run after the characters. Then, about 40 minutes later, I was running up the stairs and my right flip flop snapped! Chat Icon unreal!
