Runners what other cardio do you do

I run approximately 3 days a week. The orthopedist told me I need to alternate my cardio workouts but how can I achieve my running goals if there is only so many days to run?

What other cardio do you do besides running? Would you do both on the same day? I do an aquatic class but I don't do anything else on that day. I am exhausted by the time I get out of the pool.

I did my first spin class ever on Sunday. Holy crap!!! I was very sore and on Monday I made the mistake to speed walk (could barely jog) which put me out until today. I do weights on alternating days of running but I am not a fan. If I keep up with spinning I think I will be good on the weight training?? Sure feels like it does. I even felt slightly sore on my arms. I know the spinning will definitely make my legs stronger but there is no way anytime soon I could see myself doing spinning and running.

Just looking to see what other runners do for cardio so you don't run the risk of injury. Orthopedist told me in over time if all I do is run my knee could get worse. Since I've started the aquatic class my knee hasn't hurt one bit. Chat Icon

I usually Spin on cross training days. Spin is not strength training. You should def. strength train for long term health benefits. If your knee is already bad, it is so important to strengthen the muscles around it,as well as your core, so you can continue to run for as long as you'd like.

I swim and bike. Right now, training for a tri. But in general, I am more of a runner with maybe 1 day of swimming thrown in during the week.
I find that I get good strength training from yoga- an active class, like power vinyasa. Lots of push ups, leg and core strength. I haven't weight trained in years- just subbed in yoga.
I used to use an elliptical, but I think that would be torturous now.
Love spinning, but have no time to get to classes. :(

Re: Runners what other cardio do you do

I don't use weight machines but I look up strength exercises on Pinterest, organize the pictures into a Word doc, and then record how many reps I do.

The next day or two I evaluate how I feel and lower or raise the reps. I've tried bike riding too but don't like it as much. Exercise videos, dance games on the PS3, yoga, Jillian Michaels.

I switch it up to keep it interesting. But I'm not a serious runner at all, so I'm not trying to pick up the slack of not running as often.

When I can (currently sidelined with an injury), I going spinning, ride my bike outside, or swim. I also did a bit of elliptical training but since I had going to a gym, I try to avoid that.

BTW, you get more used to spinning over time. I used to die when I went to class, now I work up a really good sweat but can keep up!

Spinning or bike riding
^really helps the day after a long run for recovery!

I also do tabata or HIIT for various activities and crossfit type workouts or Insanity.

Swimming

Elliptical and don't underestimate the benefits of walking. It really is a great, low impact exercise. Perfect for my easy days and recovery days.

And I also never skip strength training. I think it's extremely important.

^ me too. I really rely on running most, but you can get a great cardio workout in with swimming and biking.

Re: Runners what other cardio do you do

I walk. Sometimes elliptical.
It's all i have access too.
walking can definitely be challenging...we walked 7 miles the other day & my legs were more tired & sore than running.
ETA: I strength train, total body, 2x a week. I'd love more, but it doesn't fit in my schedule. I am trying to add body wt exercises at home, to make it 3 days.

The first 20 minutes killed me. I sat on the bike and just pedaled more than anything else. The other 25 minutes I kept up with some of the class… some but I did finish the class. But it was torture either way. But a good torture. So much that I want to do the class again on Sunday. Chat Icon

Re: Runners what other cardio do you do

For those that do weight machines, are there specific ones that you do? I just look at the machine labels and what muscles they focus on and do that. I haven’t weight trained in years and it’s the least fun part of exercising for me. I know I need it especially in my core.

I haven’t gone walking in a long time, but I will try to go for evening walks with the boys in the double stroller or wagon.

My knee isn’t bad at all anymore. Went to ortho got xray done and he pretty much said I need to strengthen the muscles around the knee. Alternate my cardio and not focus solely on running. Since I started the aquatic class three weeks ago, I’ve seen a big improvement in my knee. I do need to add a more structured routine for strength training.
