Re: jack russell terrier
Jack Russells are KNOWN for needing ALOT of exercise and ALOT of attention. They are a high energy breed, can be nippy, and will need alot of structured exercise (throwing a ball back and forth daily, etc). I actually was bit, like a CHOMP, on my finger, by a Jack Russell for no reason a couple of years ago. And that particular one the owners had to toss a ball to him a few times daily, for about 20 mins a session.

My girlfriend has a Jack. IMHO I would never even think of buying this breed.
They need a LOT of attention and a LOT of excercise. I can't twll you the pictures she pists on facebook on chewed up wood in the house...he chews her doorframes. He has destroyed her car.
I love him. He IS a good dog...but I would not want a jack for myself.

Re: jack russell terrier
I have a co-worker who has a jack russell. we are always sharing dog stories. She said he is full of energy and is a great hunter. He is also a shedder because she is always lint rolling herself.
But I know she loves him like a kid.

Re: jack russell terrier
Thanks for the info!!! We are thinking about getting a dog at some point. My husband mentioned a jack russell..............but when I hear this, with two small kids..............sounds like this would be like having a third child so I don't know about this breed.

Re: jack russell terrier
I don't have one, but I've heard all the same about the high energy. This is true for any "terrier" breed. I've also heard they aren't great with little kids, but that may have just been this particular dog.

Re: jack russell terrier
I have one. When I got him (from a breeder), we didn't have a kid and we only had a 1 bedroom apartment. He drove me NUTS! He just needed a lot of exercise and attention. I spent a lot of time at the dog park and walking him and playing fetch down the hallway. He was never destructive, not any more than any other breed though. Fast forward to when he was 4 years old and we bought our house with a fenced in yard... he was like a different dog! So much more content because he got exercise to his hearts content. We had DS a year later and let me tell you, I have always loved Murphy to the ends of the Earth but how gentle he is with DS even when DS is annoying the crap out of him, Murphy has NEVER even snarled at him. I love Murphy even more because he is so wonderful with DS! It is VERY important to get a JRT from a breeder and to train them. I would get another in a heart beat now that I know more from experience.

I have a dog who is half jack Russell and half daschaund. She is very sweet and loving and not at all aggressive. She does have a lot of energy at times and loves to play chase but other times she's content to just snuggle up on your lap. She has never once bit anyone or was the least bit nasty. But she does need a lot of attention. She has a bit of separation anxiety. Other then that she's a great dog.

My ex'es aunt had a Jack Russell and it was a little psycho dog. Rex was aggressive and would bite people. Even his "mommy". When she started having grandchildren, he got worse and attacked one of the babies. They put him down after that :( I don't think it's a particularly great family breed.

Re: jack russell terrier
This is 1 of the few breeds that I would need to think twice about owning.
As others have said, they have A LOT of energy and need A LOT of exercise. If not, they will become snippy and almost bratty lol. My friends growing up had 1 and this was the only dog I ever met that I didn't want to bring home with me lol. He would bite my shoe laces and not let go. I was slightly scared of him.
But again, each dog is different. With proper training/breeding, I see no reason why this dog wouldn't turn into a good pet. Although you would need to supervise, I would think 2 young kids with tons of energy would be exactly what this type of dog needs. They can tire one another out.

Re: jack russell terrier
With 2 small kids, a Jack might work out for you. They have a lot of energy and can help tire out the kids in the yard.
With any breed you have to do your research. Look online, youtube videos of different breeds. You'll find a lot of websites with questions that can help lead you to the right breed for you.
Jacks are very smart, very loyal, beautiful little dogs. High energy, yes. But if you're high energy, or your kids are high energy, it works!
A lot of people have not so nice things to say about Miniature Pinschers. Loud, annoying, hyper, etc etc etc. I found that to be wrong. My Min Pin is the best dog. He's loving and cuddles with me all the time. Yea he likes to bark, but mainly when he's protecting the house (from his spot on the couch in front of the window LOL) Sometimes it's not the "breed" that's right or wrong. It's the dog itself.
Good Luck!

Re: jack russell terrier
Not a fan of Jack Russells. Others mentioned that they need a LOT of exercise and attention. They are small but need the activity of a big breed.
They can be nasty. Many of the bite. I know there have been several small dogs killed by JR's since they have a prey drive. They will chew up everything as well.
If you want to spend a few hours a day exercising and training, then maybe it will be better.
I wouid recommend a shih tzu, they are so good with kids and no shedding

My brother has a jack russell and like everyone else has posted she's very hyper. She requires a lot of attention. She loves people that she's familiar with, but if there is someone in the house that she doesn't know -she tries to bite them. She also has bit my little cousin because he was jumping on the couch. He was ok, but I just don't trust her with any children or strangers. I would definitely research other breeds.
