Re: Middle country school district

from teacher friends i have heard it is the lowest rated out of districts in the area over there and taxes pretty high.. sachem and longwood are rated better and taxes better in both of those areas. but i do have a few friends who went there and kids go there and like it.

Middle country isn't the best. It's not awful. Sachem would be a better option but taxes will be higher.

My cousin lives in middle country. Her daughter just graduated. She got into her first choice college which wasn't easy.
They have one of the best libraries on long island.

Re: Middle country school district

I live in the district and my son will be starting kindergarten there this September. I have heard nothing but good things about the elementary schools. Are the ratings lower than other schools, yes I'm sure they are. It's a working class area and it's a HUGE district. I don't think it's a bad district (and I am a teacher in a "good" district".) There are absolutely better districts out there, but there are worse too. Are there drug problems in the high school? Of course...as there are in every other town on Long Island.

I could have written this word for word except it is my daughter that is starting kindergarten.

I live on a block with tons of kids and never have I hear my neighbors complain about the district. I also have 3 cousins that have graduated from it and they are pretty great kids. All three of them went to a great SUNY college and had a wonderful experience in Middle Country.

Pretty much same experience as posters with good experiences.

Great library. Good sense of community. Happy with what I've seen. I'm not worried about the district at all. Budget usually passes. Neighbors like it. Etc etc

I don't go by what people who don't live here say .. Nor do I go by what teachers in other areas think or say. My kids - no matter what - will be successful in school. I say that because I will be involved.

I've also known grads and they all had a good experience. There's some mentality where if you're not in a "top" district, then your school must be like Roosevelt and kids must not be able to graduate or there will be gang wars. Not the truth, plain and simple.

This is coming from someone who went to a top district people pay out their ass to send their kids to - and I have to be honest - I wouldn't send my kids there because of my experience. But MC? Yes.

As far as drugs - that's anywhere. My school had to have undercover cops in 2001 because of the rampant drug selling and use. I have known many in my high school who commuted suicide or died from a drug overdose from heroin. A bunch of kids ended up in rehab. Parks and playgrounds were plagued by needles. And again, this is a place where people think the school is amazing. It is..in some ways .. But I found MC to suit my needs better. I'm not ignorant - I know all high schools have drugs in some form. But the amount I saw in my own HS (and the amount of hard core drugs - coke and heroin - $$$ more money = more drugs) was enough to make me think twice about buying there. Same goes for the attitudes many had - a lot of keeping up with the jones - If you weren't rich or had money it was like you were the black sheep.

I also love how it's not just a bunch of white students. I like that there is a little diversity. I like that there's not a lot of keeping up with the jones. I've encountered kind and hard working parents who are involved and friendly.

That's just my own opinion. You have to identify what you want out of a school for your kids. And you must be involved no matter what. That's the key to your child's success more than the school they attend. I like a more laid back community feel where there isn't a lot of BS to keep up with. I have found that so far while living here. I'm very happy.

I also feel my taxes are great. I'm not paying the 12k+ other people are nearby in other districts. Not even close.

And honestly - go by people who actually live here. Don't always go by what you hear secondhand or even ratings. Take them into consideration (the ratings) but don't form your opinion entirely on that - IMO.

I don't know anything about MC, but I completely agree with this. It's super important. People who don't actually have experience with places tend to have a fragmented sense of them. Experience from those who do is the most realistic you'll likely get.

I went to MC school district for elementary/middle/high school. Elementary was fine. IMO middle school and high school were subpar - I think back to what some of my teachers used to do/say/teach and shake my head. There were plenty of drugs, tons of fights, etc. But then, maybe that happens at a lot of High Schools?

Far as I recall (and they posted all the info on a wall before we graduated) no one went to an Ivy League but there were plenty of people who went to Pace, Boston U and other decent colleges. Then there were the batch of people who didn't do much with their lives. It was a balance for sure.

I was very lucky to have grown up in a motivated/educated family and I knew I wanted more out of life than what school offered me for my first 18 years - I got out of town as soon as I graduated. Since then I've earned my Master's degree and have a pretty good career set for myself.

So...I guess what I'm saying is I do not recommend the school district but if that's where life takes you - if your kids are raised knowing/believing they can do what they strive for then they'll be just fine.

eta: I don't know about the taxes being high. My parents still live in the school district and their taxes are dirt cheap in comparison to what I saw in other towns while I was house hunting and what I pay (I'm in Smithtown SD).

Middle country school district

I graduated from Middle Country, and i still leave in the district, in fact my parents graduated from it as well. I enjoy the district i think it had alot of potential when i was there and i got into a really good school as did alot of other people i know.

I dont think the taxes are so bad compared to other districts, and we have a great library and one of the fews\ districts with a universal pre-k program

Re: Middle country school district

I live in Centereach, and have 3 children in the district. My son is going into Centereach HS this year, my daughter is going into 6th grade at Dawnwood, and I have a daughter going into kindergarten.
I love the district, never heard anything negative about it from people who actutally have first hand experience. There is diversity, not as much in with the Centereach schools, more in Selden/Coram.
I have experience at every level of school here, and like I said, I love it. I live on a great block, with great neighbors, many of them grew up here and now raise their famiilies here.
Amazing library.
I have a friend who lives right across the street from me who grew up here, went through the schools, and is a nurse practitioner.
No district is perfect, but Middle Countrty is very far from the worst.
You could live in an amazing district or a terrible one, and fail, or excel, it depends on the indiviual child and the parents I believe.

My husband teaches in the district and he always says its a "middle of the road district". Its not a "great" district but not a "bad" one. The only issue he has with it is really just that since it is a middle of the road district they dont always get the funding for programs and stuff that other districts have.

Agreed. When I worked there, that was my impression too. I grew up in a neighboring town (Port Jeff Station) and thought Comsewogue was comparable academically.

I worked in Centereach High School. I have no idea what the elementary schools are like, but the high school was fine. Kids come from mostly middle and working class families. There were course offerings for high achieving kids and an excellent SpEd department. Teaching was solid overall and staff turnover was low. I'm not sure if it's still there, but there was a huge cosmetology program and auto mechanic program that allowed kids to graduate with a certification. Most graduates of CHS and Newfield HS went onto Suffolk Community College, but there were a few high-achieving graduates that went to big name schools.

It's a large district, but with two middle and two high schools, it's a more manageable size. A middle-ground kid is less likely to get lost here than in a district like Sachem. CHS was not particularly diverse, but that's not atypical for the area. There was a tiny ESL population but they were well-served.

Yes, there are drugs - but there always are. Discipline problems were usually related to things like cutting classes or excessive (instead of "real" crimes). Not that there weren't bad kids, but basic safety was never an issue.

I'm not sure in what world Longwood is a better SD than Middle Country. Chat Icon

MC isn't the best in the area but far from the worst.

Middle country school district

I definitely would not rank Longwood higher than Middle Country.

I graduated from there and did very well. Had no problems and received an excellent education. I would have no hesitation to send my own child there except I wanted a better special ed program. My only issue with the district now would be that they are severely hurting in terms of budget and used up most of there reserves. But overall I have no issues with the school's gen ed program.
