Potty training a constipated child
Please help! Anyone have experience toilet training a child who is constipated ? My dd will be 3 at the end of oct and has been suffering from constipation since she came off formula! She has been to the GI doc and they have her on Miralax.. My problem is she is going to a school where they won't change her so I have been trying to get her trained. She will pee on the potty but that's it! I have a whole box of goodies but nothing seems to work.. I would not push the issue but they won't change her and I will be running up to school to change her. I tired to get my money back but they won't give it to me and its a few hundred that I don't want to throw away.. Ugh The only reason i picked the school is bc my son is there in the 4s class and it was going to be easy to have them both in one school!! Sorry so long.

Yes she will go in underwear .. Then she tells me to change her. She has even gone on the floor.. Just not the potty.

My DD had trouble at first, and we gave her a lot of high fiber foods (even fiber one snack bars) to make her have to go, and then I would watch for her signals that she was about to go and run her to the potty. My DD got upset though if she went in her pants. Also, try to get her to be very active - I found that helped. And rewards help a lot too, along with lots of praise. GL!

Do they know what is causing the constipation? My cousin was like that because all she drank was milk and she wasn't a great eater... Ended up that she was lactose intolerant... It only caused constipation. They figured it out when she was 4... It was so bad that she would get impacted from holding it because it hurt.. Once they took her off the milk, things started to change.. She was able to have a normal BM after a week or so. And then she poop trained in 2 weeks.

This was my DD. On Miralax for years. I struggled for years with a child who tortured herself by holding it in. It was absolutely heartbreaking and stressful.
I did the 3 day potty training and that amazignly worked. She actually started pooping better on the toilet, letting it out, faster than she would in a diaper. I figured that was due to the position of sitting on the toilet (we used big toilet, not potty).
Believe it or not, shortly after doing that, her constipation issues started easing.
I know you didn't ask for this advice, but are you on whole milk, 2% or 1%? B/c when I went from 2% to 1% I could see a huge difference in her stools, and she went easier too.
Oh and another thing I did and do now is I make her sit on the toilet (never did this until recently that she is in school longer) about a half hour after eating on days where she will be out of the house. I think the sitting position helps it come out b/c alot of days, days where she didn't seem to "have" to go, she goes after sitting on it.

Having had a child with severe constipation, I had repeatedly asked about her being lactose intolerant and I was told she would have loose stools, not hard stoools. Interesting that your cousin was told that.

Thanks for all the posts. I should back up and add that I had her tested for milk and celiac disease all came back normal. I took her off milk a while ago and she has a great diet. She really eats almost everything.. The doctor said its just a learned behavior at this point. I just don't know how to train her.. What is the 3 day ? It's school that's going to be the problem.. Before Miralax she would poop 6-7 times a day.. Not big ones small ones.. Now it's like 3xs with Miralax ..

She is now 20 and she is still lactose intolerant. As she got older, it turned into the typical symptoms..
In toddlers and younger kids, constipation can be the only sign... My son got severely constipated when we switched him to milk. It took months for him to adjust to it. If he has to much milk now, it backs him up... He is almost 4..

My daughter is a lot like you are describing your cousin. Our friend, who is a pediatric Nurse (who happens to work in our peds office) told us to cut milk out of her diet because she could be lactose intolerant. Which makes sense because DH and I were both lactose intolerant as babies. With DH, he was constipated. I was opposite  Our regular pediatrician told us to to put her on miralax,which we did for the past year and a half. She's 2.5. But I hate the fact of her taking this every day. Did your cousin just cut out milk, or did she cut out all dairy. Yogurt, cheese, etc. And was the milk replaced with rice milk or soy milk?

This was us too. We also did 3 day Potty training and DS poops better now then he ever did. I havent had to give Miralax since we trained him almost two months ago. I will say that we had week of poop accidents before he finally was trained for poop completely. To help things out I have really cut back on his milk. My peditrician said they only need a cup or two a day at the most at 3 years old. Plus we are loading him up with fruit and high fiber stuff. If he doesnt go for a day.. I give prune juice the next day to get things going again. So far so good.
Good luck! I know it's so stressful to see them struggle like that !

My son had this exact problem. He was still wearing pull ups at night when he turned 4! He was scared to go on the party so he would hold it, it would become hard. I ended up doing the suppositories twice. We just continually told him he couldn't hold his poop because then it would hurt. He eventually got it. Luckily he was a night time pooper so we never had to worry about school. Good luck!
