Re: Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
I'm tired of all the FB posts from non-parents to parents that they need control their children.
Some of us try really hard, but it takes A LOT to get a child out of a tantrum once they are in it. Don't run your mouth unless you've been there done that.

It's about time someone answered back to that kind of shaming and cruelty.

Hats off to him!
I particularly liked his description of a tantruming kid looking like a poodle with rabies! I immediately had a picture of my son yesterday going nuclear about the fact that "I want TOO much milk in my teacup" right after "I want the orange noodles"

Plus, like he said, the tantrum is usually a RESULT of a parent disciplining or setting boundaries for a child and NOT giving in to their demands. The same people that say control your kid are the same that say parents are too lax with their kids today and dont tell them no. They dont realize that the probable root cause is the fact that they werent given in to the child's demands.
Cause and effect people. I WISH it worked so that when you told a 3 year old "no", they just went "OK mommy" and went about their merry way. If it were only that easy. Sometimes the price you pay for sticking to your guns is a meltdown of catastrophic proportions.

Re: Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
I love the part about the parents of grown children bc DH and I are always saying how people forget how THEIR kids behaved at 2yo yet they look at my DS who is a stubborn headstrong 2yo with disbelieving eyes!
We were at a McDs recently when DS had a fit bc he hates to hold hands and so DH carried him across the parking lot. Usually he can calm down once the offense if over but this day he just couldnt. after the fit of all fits in the restaurant, I took DS outside to try to relax him. but each time I diverted his attention he would remember and start screaming again! So DH and I took turns with older DS eating. When I was eating a woman came up to me and said how bad she felt, how cute DS2 was etc. She said, Some people forget how their kids behaved, but I dont, then she turned to her tween daughter and told me stories of her at 2yo! Made me laugh, and feel alot better!
People should realize that we dont WANT our child to throw fits in public, but we need to PARENT! and sometimes that means a kid who can't handle not getting exactly what they want throwing a fit! And I am sorry if it makes your shopping experience poor but I have to do what I have to do!

Re: Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
You know, before I had my DD, I thought the same way. Then she came SCREAMING into my world. And now I am THAT parent on line in a store with a screaming toddler. Nothing will stop her. No discipline on the planet. Once she is going- it's over. I could haul off and hit her and it wouldn't matter/ I could threaten until I am blue in the face. Time outs- yeah right, those really work.
So I really think you have to be a parent (and I cringe even saying that because it's SO cliche and worthy) to understand.

We should get my DS and your DD together! I always say there is no stopping DS bc he goes from 0-60 so quickly you dont even know what hit you and it could be over nothing! This weekend we were at a park and he drank all his sippy (Apple juice was in it) but he wanted OJ and I, Bad mommy, didnt bring my entire fridge with my on the off chance he would want something else (I had the AJ, water and juice boxes) and he threw a fit, I think he was heard a mile away screaming!
I never knew how hard this age could be until DS2 was born...kicking and screaming and he hasnt stopped yet!

Oh this is SOOOO her! She wants what she wants on demand and God forbid she doesn't get it. There are times her screams have me closing all windows and doors for fear of the neighbors calling the poilce. I still swear we won't get through her toddler years without one visit from the Suffolk PD. I am just waiting for it. It's good to hear I am not the only one dealing with this. It's like dealing with an insane person!

Re: Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
It is just kids that age.....their brains are not yet wired to be able to reel themselves back in once they go off the deep end. They just dont have the capacity for it yet.

Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
I used to judge now I relate. My dd is only 4m but lost it last month when we were food shopping. She did not want to be in her carseat. We joke that she is already a drama queen.

Re: Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
This made me LOL
I always love the older folks who lecture about how THEIR kids weren’t as “attached to electronics” as kids are nowadays. That’s probably true, but mainly because, well, YOU DIDN’T HAVE ELECTRONICS. You had a toaster and a black and white TV with 2 channels, both of which were pretty easy to regulate. But, sure, congratulations for not letting your kids use things that didn’t exist. On that note, I have a strict “no time machines or hover-boards” policy in my home. It is stringently enforced. I’m thinking of writing a parenting book: “How to Stop Your Child From Becoming Dependent Upon Technology That Isn’t Invented Yet”

Re: Dear Parent, You Need to Control Your Kids
I loved this article because I have a VERY difficult 3yo DS, who basically just throws fits all. day. long. I've been dealing with this with him for so long, that it barely even phases me anymore when we're out and it's happening (but DH still gets completely embarrassed and wants to leave IMMEDIATELY). I've gotten many dirty looks from other adults when he's in the middle of one of his fits in public....and it used to bother me, but I try not to let it anymore.
This is my favorite line from the article because it is the absolute truth:
"Parenting is the easiest thing in the world to have an opinion about, but the hardest thing in the world to do."
