Bad habit, OCD, or just allergies...
Not sure if the following is related but i am going to give some background to help me figure this out:
So my 4 yr old DS has had bad allergies all his life! He always complained of an itchy nose, so he would often rub it! We had him on 2 allergy meds during the spring - Zyrtec and singulair and that really worked! But I felt like it made him nuts and aggressive and loads of extreme tantrums! So when spring ended we ended the meds and thankfully the allergies stayed away
Over the last couple of months he has formed some bad habits - I don't even think he knows he is doing it and it is progressively getting more and more frequent! If I point it out to him hd just tells me he is itchy! But really!!?!?! This much!?!?! I am posting a video to see:
Anyone have any insight on this and how I can get him to stop - will putting him back on meds help???! Next dr check up I am def going to bring if up snc show this video - but I was wondering if anyone was in my boat !!
Thanks
First it was just the nose, then it was nose and across forehead, now it's those two PLUS the eye area by his nose!!
My mom is making me all worried telling me he has OCD - and how he is going to be made fun of at school! Grrr

It does look more like a compulsive behavior than some trying to extinguish an itch. I would should this video clip to your pediatrician and see what they think. It might have started out as an itch initially, but it looks as if its turned into a behavior. If his eyes were truly itchy, he would probably rub them more aggressively rather than poking underneath his eyes. I watched the clip several times to see if there was a pattern, ie/upward swipe of mouth then nose, poke under eyes then swipe forehead ... He was completely consistent with the manor he swiped and poked, but not the order of swipes and pokes.
When does he exhibit this behavior? Is it all throughout the day? When he's tired? Bored? During unstructured times?
What does he do when he is engaged in an incompatable activity ( forced to use 2 hands to complete a task --- finger painting with both hands, riding a bike)? Will he stop what he is doing or end an activity to swipe/poke?

All the time but I think it is mostly when he is concentrating and not using at least one of his hands

He usually does it in the same order - this might not been the best video - when it was just nose and forehead he did it nose, forehead. - nose, forehead... But this eye one is a new thing - so I have to see what this new one is and how it will affect it! He doesn't always do the eye one either - it is mostly nose forehead
He doesn't do it when riding a bike but when he is watching tv or playing iPad or watching his trains - but i dont think his activities like riding his bike or constructing his train tracks are interrupted - I think he waits until he is done
Thank you ladies - I guess I have to read up on compulsive disorders - I don't k ow anything about it - I assumed it was when they know their doing it and have to do it a certain amt of times etc!
I just have to figure out how I can break him of this habit

Does he do this mostly when playing video games or using the tablet?
My cousin developed a tic from playing too many video games. When my aunt severely limited his exposure to them (down to about 15 min 2x a day from several hours at a time) The tic began to disappear until it was gone.

I would definitely bring him to the pediatrician. I noticed that he follows the same patterns over & over.

I would think it depends on why he's doing it, anxiety? OCD? Tics? Bad habit? Eliminating it might be a combination of addressing it behaviorally, cognitively (is he aware he's doing it?) And maybe medically with meds...

This is an old post but i just looked at the video as I was curious becvause my son and nephew have tics. They look like tics. Ignore them...they come and go in some kids in the developmental years. Video games make them worse and occur in boys more then girls. Hopefully he has slowed down. But don't be shocked if they return later on.

Thank you so much for your response!
I was going to get him evaluated - but the paper work was never completed! I thought it was worse during video games too! But we hid the iPad for a week and it is still bad - he does it even on the soccer field or when playing with his trains - I can't figure out a pattern as to when he does it more bec He does is all day long every day! I just hoping he grows out of it! But not sure how he will!

This sounds exactly like my younger brother (who's now 28 and "tic" free). I'd say from about 4yr old and on through most of middle school, he had some sort of "tic". Blinking his eyes repeatedly, making these strange scruchie faces that I can't even begin to explain, clicking his teeth, clearing his throat, etc. Each one more annoying than the last. They worried my folks to no end, they brought it up to his ped, brought him to specialists and they all said the same thing; nervous tic, he'll outgrow them. He did. I'd definitely bring up your concerns with your DS's ped, but this could very well be nothing serious and something he just outgrows.
