Garmin users - problems connecting to satellite
I've had my Garmin 405 for about 2 years. When it works, it's great, but I have trouble connecting to satellites almost every time I try to use it. It can take anywhere from 5 - 15 minutes and I probably look like an idiot standing still with my arm over my head. I'll watch the satellite bar almost fill to the end, and then it drops back down. Huge annoyance!
I run in Central Park, so there shouldn't be any issue with building interference.
Any tips? Or do I just have a lemon?

Garmin users - problems connecting to satellite
I've never been able to get my Garmin to connect in Central Park (I have a 305. I'm also too impatient to wait much longer than a couple of minutes).
I just use my iphone and use the mapmyrun app when I run in the city. I find the Garmin works decently on Long Island by my house, but it worked the best when I lived in Tucson. Connected easily, never lost signal and was more accurate. I'm not quite sure why it was so much better out there, but I think it might have to do with the lack of cloud/tree cover.

Re: Garmin users - problems connecting to satellite
I find letting it lay on a flat surface not on my wrist works best. When I'm home, I stick it out on my deck while I finish getting ready and by the time I come outside, it's locked in. Maybe you can just put it on a park bench and try it?

Re: Garmin users - problems connecting to satellite
My DH used to have the 405 when we lived in the city. It never worked. He ended up selling it. Not sure if it's the model or what.
I have a 305 and use it with no problems out on the island.

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like the Garmin is just not very compatible with NYC!

Mine's the same way on Long Island. I usually just turn it on while I'm getting ready and pray it connects by the time I'm ready to go.
