ugh, please tell me how to deal with the neighborhood bully

My ds is 4. We live in an apartment complex. The kids all play together either in the front or back. There is one little boy probably around 7 or 8 that all the kids follow around. He is amean, nasty child. He is very calculated with the mean things he does. I am the only parent who sits outside and watches my child. the rest of the parents could care less. I have seen this boy knock things out of my sons hands, pour sand on his back, push him, and chase him with intent to hurt. I always tell him to stop and leave my son alone. i tell him it is not nice. I tell my son all the time to stay away from him, but he is 4 and he just doesn't get it. How do i deal with this? I get so angry and i want to scream at this kid. His mom seems like a flake. I know I need to tell her , what do I say?

I would discipline the kid if it affected my child. I wouldn't even tell the mom. She would prob just get defensive.

I would never in a million years discipline someone else's child. You never know if that parent is going to go nutso on you, or your kid. Obviously you telling him to stop isn't working, so I would just knock on his door and tell his mom the deal.

Otherwise just don't let your kid play with him. Take him to the park, etc.

I would ask the mom if she could tell her son that your son is too young for him to "play" with...I would make it clear to her that the rough play her son engages is not appropriate for a child who is only 4. That way you're not accusing her son of being a bully outright, just implying that you'd like him to stay away from your kid. And maybe she'll get the hint that her son plays too rough and actually discipline him herself!

Good luck!

I may be "that" mom. And I may get flamed for saying this, but if I had to protect my child, I would be very intimidating to the bully. I have had to do that in the past on playgrounds. There were 8-9 year olds taunting my son and calling him a girl. Lets just say that stopped when I finally approached them. And they walked away not feeling too pleased with themselves.

I work in a school, so I am used to telling kids no. When I said discipline I meant tell the kid no or to move away. I wouldn't yell at a strange kid, but he were coming towards my child in a harmful way I have no problem telling him to stop. None.

I would talk to the Mom or Dad and be VERY firm that this is NOT ok behavior. Then if it happens again I would let this punk know it's not ok. If it continues I would contact ALL the parents to tell them about this bully. If it went to violence I would contact 411 and ask if an officer could come and talk to hi and the parents. If that didn't help and I saw him hurt my kid well I would forcefully pull him off my kid and march his ass to his parents and go ape shit. NO ONE hurts my kid and I don't care how old you are.

My son is 3.

If I see my son being bullied, I walk over and wait for bullies to dissipate, usually my presence is enough.

I then tell him and try to teach my son to be aggressive with his speech and tell bullies to "stop, no!" "I will not play with you" and ignore and avoid.

We role play this at home, and practice with puppets. A confident child is never bullied for long, imo.
