I think your confrontation with them, using curse words, is just as crass as their comment. I would have spoken to the manager, and had him/her reprimand them. Teens say a lot of things without thinking, and I'm sure you will realize that when your DD becomes one.
I agree.
Absolutely agree, I'm surprised it didn't escalate...
I agree, too.

This!!! All of it!!!
I DEF would have knocked them out if they said that about my kid!!! Good for you for keeping calm, you are a better person than me!
Seriously? You would have knocked them out, and then what? Ended up in jail for assaulting teenagers over something stupid they said? Great example for your child.

I totally get where you are coming from. Hearing someone say something like that about your child can definitely cause you to snap back. They shouldn't have said what they said and good for you on calling them out on it. However, I wouldn't take it further than that.

Re: "Can't he shut that damn kid up"
This has never happened to me at a retail store but I don't think it would have bothered me. My kids do surprisingly well at retail stores but my 2yo is THAT toddler at the restaurant. He can be loud and roudy. He can have tantrums. I have never heard anyone say that about my kid but I am sure every waitress/waiter thinks it. This is why we do not go out to eat that much.

I kind of agree with this.
I am generally not one to start anything so in all likelihood, while I may have felt hurt, I would've let it go. I wouldn't have said anything or even approached a manager. Really, what does it accomplish anyway?
When I was a teen and worked in retail, we ALL complained about the customers all the time but it was harmless venting. They are just kids without a clue, like we all were at one time. KWIM?

ITA. If this is your reaction then I wouldn't be surprised if a child with parent with such anger (over something so small) throws tantrums.
What's the big deal? No one wants to hear kids scream bloody murder. No one. Why fault them?

Hmmmm. If I were in that situation, I *might have* said something like, 'hey, that's not nice to say.' But, people are different and if it made you angry, it made you angry. Sorry

were they kids themselves? I honestly wouldn't expect much more from a bunch of teenagers - God knows I said that a million times before I had kids .....and STILL say it when it seems like the parent can't be bothered to acknowledge their kid is throwing a fit in a public place ......(NOT saying you or your DH did that)
I don't think I'd be looking to get anyone fired over it -

Uncalled for.
What is actually uncalled for is the witch hunt going on to get people fired, knock them out, punch them in their throats, etc, for commenting on wanting a child to stop screaming.
eta- It's pretty extreme to want to harm someone (a teen.young person no less) b/c they don't want to hear a kid scream and happened to say it and got caught. Is it really violence worthy? That's most definitely uncalled for.

But she didn't get violent. Someone else made that comment. She yelled in the heat of the moment. Your comment insinuating that her anger is the reason for her child's tantrum was unnecessary IMO.

I AGREE!!
I worked in Chuck E Cheese for 8 years and sorry, saw my fair share of brats and made comments under my breath, in the kitchen, etc..... when I was 16 I blamed the little kids
at age 33 I blame the parents
Its a stressful enviroment working with kids and being chipper ALL DAY LONG. They were on another aisle and never expected to run into the mom. Yes, they shouldn't have said ANYTHING but cut them some slack. I'm sure its been a long day and they hear crying ALL DAY LONG!!

If they comment was said TO ME, then I might have got mad but they said it to each other and you just happen to over hear it. In your situation, I would not be upset and I certainly wouldn't be looking to get anyone fired.
Truth be told, if it were me, I'd probably be screaming to the back of the store for my DH to shut her up
( my DD is almost 3 so I can relate to meltdowns in public)

Re: "Can't he shut that damn kid up"
I would have been upset too. Its really hard to hear other people say negative things about your child, especially when it's something you don't have control over (ie a 1yo having a meltdown). I would think everyone's response would be somewhat upset and protective as a parent. I also don't think it is wrong to say something to the employees. Better to be taught to be professional and kind now then to learn when you are older and may actually lose an important job. We have "younger" people who work the front at my office and if they are caught being unprofessional to clients at all either directly or indirectly (ie speaking unprofessionally in front of clients), they are not given a second chance by our practice owner. I would think twice about saying flippant remarks like that in the future if I was called out on it (or at least say them in my head/privacy of my car lol), so maybe you did them a service for their future job positions In any event sorry you had to over hear that and deal with the stress. This is why I don't leave the house with my 17 mo some days

I am not sure what you are saying. The OP said she wanted to punch them in the throat and the above poster said she would have knocked them out, to which Bargainmama replied. And I then did as well, in response to either violent statement.

Re: "Can't he shut that damn kid up"
Just to clarify for those who think I am on some witch hunt, I'm not. I am not looking for them to be fired but perhaps they need some additional training on what is or isn't acceptable on the work floor. My kid wasn't on this extended tantrum, she screamed and I stopped what I was doing to get her to bring her out of the store. Either way, I'm over it and have moved on. I don't feel bad for saying what I did (which was not fists flying and f bomb dropping by the way).

I said it in anger when writing my post, you've never said something out of anger and not meant it literally? My dd was in the back of the store as well so she didn't hear/see anything I said.

Sure I have. We all have, just as these teens did when hearing your DD scream. Which is why we said cut the kids some slack. I can only imagine what it's like to work in a toystore and hear tantrums all day and maybe saying something in the heat of the moment to your friend/coworker, when the next tantrum sets you over the edge (such as these teens did when they heard your child scream). So now you can understand how maybe they said something in the heat of the moment too.

Sorry but I think what they said is no big deal at all. I'm sure I've said MUCH worse about screaming kids, before I had one myself! It's not like your pediatrician said it... it was a couple of teenagers... Who cares?! My primary emotion would be embarrassment, not anger.

The fact of the matter is they were unprofessional. Yes, they DO need to learn that despite how you really feel, when in a work environment you are expected to represent the company you work for and cater to its customers.
They were unprofessional, bottom line. It is a lesson they will need to learn sometime better now than at their first real job.

I agree.
We were on a plane once and DS had a meltdown. It was a long flight and it was just for a portion of the flight but, I could hear the people behind me, in their early 20s, critiquing the way we handled it and it made me quite annoyed - like these people don't realize that you are doing all you can!
ETA - and meltdowns in a toy store really can't be all that uncommon!!!
