baby on the large side

Has anyone's baby been on the large side towards the end of their pregnancy? I am a tiny girl and have two weeks left and the baby is already 9lbs. I am just scared not sure if I am going natural or C-Section.

I've heard that they are not entirely accurate when it comes to guessing the baby's weight. They could be off by as much as a pound!

Re: baby on the large side

They a re always off on the weight. They estimated both my daughters at 9 pounds but my first was 7 pounds, 14 oz and my 2nd was 8 pounds, 1 oz

The weight is always an estimate. They told me dd was large too...literally 2 days before she was born they said she was 9lb 5oz so they scheduled me for an induction. Dd came on her own and only weighed 8lb 5oz
Try not to stress too much about their estimates

Eta if you want to go natural tell your doctor that
Since weight is an estimate I don't think they would force you to have a csection if baby and you are healthy

i wouldnt think twice about that, they can be totally inaccurate.
your body was MADE to birth a baby of whatever weight it produces. barring GD where the baby is too large due to sugar issues, or a poor position (like breech) i would never schedule a cs based soley on weight alone. empower yourself! you were made to do this!

Re: baby on the large side

All of my growth sonograms had DS at 9+lbs. I opted for a c-section because my doctors felt I would not be able to deliver naturally. Well DS was 7lbs 12oz. The sonos are just a rough estimate.

Re: baby on the large side

I'm a rather petite lady (5'2"). I was going for a VBAC with #2, my DS & the sonos estimated him at over 9lb. My midwives had no concern but the OB I was required to meet with once- who did the sono- called me that night to recommend a c-section because the baby was just too big for me. I declined. I had a successful VBAC giving birth to ab 8lb6oz baby boy who was born in a half hour of pushing with very minimal tearing. We're made to do this! And the sonos are not-so-accurate estimates.

Re: baby on the large side

Definitely don't go by growth sonos...they seem to always be off. Thankfully my OB didn't do growth sonos as I think it just makes women worry that their baby will be too big/freaks them out. However, she thought my DS would be well over 8.5 pounds based on palpation (I am 5feet tall) . I delivered a 7#11oz baby boy vaginally without meds and she said, that's how much we can tell about their size prior to delivery. You'll be fine!

baby on the large side

My boys were both measuring on the large aide, this baby (team green) isalso measuring big. I gave birth to both boys nnaturally. Both a week late the first 9lbs 2oz abd the second 9lbs 12oz, if I keep at the same growth rate this baby will be over 10lbs. Both labors were easy. Good luck

I wouldn't say "always" Chat Icon both of mine were on to the OUNCE

DS measured 8.5lb at 40w and was born 8.7lb at 40w2d

DD measured 7.4lb at 38w4d and was born at 7.6lb on 38w6d

To the OP, listen to your doctor. If you go into labor and they feel you cannot deliver vaginally, they will opt for a csection Chat Icon

The estimates are just that - and estimate, so they can be under, right or over. With DS, they were slightly under. They estimated he would be almost 9 lbs and he was 9lbs 3 oz.

I think you should listen to your doctor, but give yourself the opportunity to go into labor and see how you progress. A friend of mine is very petite and had very big babies (9lbs 10 oz and above). Her doctor was very concerned that she would not be able to birth them. She went into labor, never progressed past a certain point. Her doctor was concerned that she would break her pelvis and the baby its clavicle. She opted for a C-section because the baby was in some distress during the labor. I believe she progressed to 8cm before they decided on the C-section. They estimated her babies would be over 9 lbs and it was true for her. There is no way of knowing for sure.

Re: baby on the large side

I am going through this right now. At 34 weeks my baby was weighing 7lbs.... i go for another growth sono on Thursday (36.5 weeks) to see how big he has progressed. We started discussing c-section. I know that the growth sonos can be off, but i would rather have a scheduled C-section. My fear is that i will go into labor and after pushing for however long they decide to do the c-section.

I am trying not to think about it to much until i see the dr and go over everything.

Re: baby on the large side

I have 2 big boys, DS1 was 9lb14oz born ON his EDD. DS2 was 9lb8oz born at 39w.

Both were Scheduled C/s. With my first I the sonos were estimating DS was big, so I actually was sent to the hospital for a better estimate and there they said DS was 9lb4oz. 3 days later he was born.

When deciding on labor vs c/s my dr reminded me that sonos are an estimate, mine happened to be pretty close but she said if we did a c/s and I wound up with a 7lb baby I couldnt be upset.

We did have the added knowledge with mine that my brothers kids were all big as well and delivered by the same OB.

I remember someone on here who was estimated to have an over 9lb baby, and her DS was under 8! so it does happen!

Re: baby on the large side

With my first, they were concerned of his size and I was due for a sono on Monday, but had him Sunday. I went into labor on my own, but then ended up needed a section.

This time around, I tested low for PAPP A which can affect growth, so I get growth sonos every 4 weeks. Again, this baby is on the larger size (2 weeks ahead) so I'm having another.

Re: baby on the large side

It's not accurate.

I'm a petite girl and gained about 25lbs during pregnancy. The baby was measuring in the 9lb range too. He came out at 7.9.

NOW he looks like a 4month old.. not a 2m old. He just hit 12.5lbs yesterday.
