Privacy laws concerning lactation room

It's one thing after another with this place. I got walked in on last week, it was another mother, and she has done it to at least two of us, banging on the door before it's even her time. I complained to HR, I have no idea what came of it, because I haven't heard anything. Now, there is a list outside the door of the lactation room stating who is in the room at that time and what room it is. Outside the room there is a label that says "Private room" is it petty of me not to want my name outside the door where I am sitting in there exposed? I feel like it's an invasion of privacy. I understand that the names are outside the conference rooms, but this is a private matter, or am I prude?

I don't think keeping a list outside the room is a big deal. Sorry.

No, you are not prude. This is definitely a private matter. All HR needed to do was send an email to all the moms that use the lactation room and let them know they need to stick with their scheduled time to use the room and not interrupt when the room is occupied. I am sure there are other moms who are not thrilled about displaying their names on the list. Try to get them to complain to HR about it.

I didn't BF but I would feel disturbed also since I know I would want privacy. I don't blame you one bit. I would complain to HR that for your privacy, you would prefer to not have names displayed on the list.

I have never had to deal with this issue, but I understand the way you feel. I would not want my name posted. It's completely different than having a name posted on a conference room or office

I know of one of the other woman who also doesn't like it. I'll see if I can get her involved. It just makes me uneasy, after her walking in on my, I am already on edge, I just hate my name being on there. This is a huge company, and it makes me uncomfortable, you don't know what kind of people you work with, ya know.

i dont think it would bother me - when i was pumping at work, i did it in my own office. everyone knew if the door was closed and the shades were closed, that is what i was doing. so doing it that way or in a different room with my name on it really wouldnt bother me

is there any way your HR can just hold the key to the room? that was my companies old policy (but the lactation room was under renovation when i needed it which is why i pumped in my office).
they had one key and it was held by the HR receptionist. every morning you would email her the time slots you wanted and then you would get the key and go use the room returning the key when you were done. this ensured that no one would walk in on you or that no one would knock bc hr had a schedule

eta - can you just put down your first name or just your last name? i know in my company no one else has my first name but there are 3 other c***ls so i could put that and they would never know which one it was

It would bother me too!!! You are not prude!! Not only would I not want people to know that I'm currently in there, I wouldn't want people to know when I'm expected to be in there. This should be private, IMO.

you might want to edit your post so that your last name isn't in it... (i *-ed it out in the quote just in case)

Re: Privacy laws concerning lactation room

Maybe you can ask HR for a lock to be put on the door, so no one is "walked" in on.

There is a lock on the outdoors, but it's a keypad, and if you have the code you can walk in. I also put a post it on the outside that says "in Use" she knew someone was in there. I am not the first person that she has banged the door on. It also bothers me because this list is a new thing. I've been pumping for 2 months now, this woman comes back from leave and the list is up?

I would probably go up to the woman myself and say 'not sure if you realize it, but when the sign says in use, that means you shouldn't walk in. and when you have an allotted time frame, that's the ONLY time you should walk in. You are infringing on other people's privacy by doing anything otherwise. I'm sure you wouldn't want anyone walking in on you while you were in a state of undress, so please give the same consideration to others'

or something like that..

See what her response is and then take it from there. If she's super apologetic, then move on and hope she is respectful. If she's not and blows you off, then go to HR and report her again.

THIS & sit in the chair with the chair and your back against the door. Problem solved with being walked in on.

also, if it were me, I would place my OWN sign over the keypad on the outside before closing the door.
