Has anyone ever gone?
Is there a lot to see?
Would you recommend it?

Train Show? Is it like the lights and stuff? If so, it's nothing special. It's cute if you're already passing through, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. I work in Grand Central and I barely notice it's going on until I'm running into tourists who are gaping up at the ceiling open mouthed. Chat Icon

Gotcha! I know in the past it's been the holiday light show, I didn't know if there was anything extra.

Nothing wrong with being a tourist! But I just always forget about it until they stop dead in their tracks right in front of me! Chat Icon

I've wanted to go there for a few years.
Will try to make it this year with my godson.

I'm sure it doesn't compare but The Grand Central one is freeChat Icon

I have a membership so it's included. Go when they have Thomas the Tank show as well. Makes the day very worth while.

It's not too much of a show. It's in the Transit Museum Annex. They have a rotating display and every year around Christmas, it is the Holiday Trains. It is cute to check out if you are in the area, but it wouldn't make a special trip for it. I am in GCT every day, so I usually take a peek.

The NYBG's train show is much better, but it gets so crowded!

The NYBG show is an entirely different kind of show/display. I take my kids to both each year. To be frank they are more fascinated by the Grand Central display.

The display at GCT is a somewhat realistic display with lots of small details. There is a street level with realistic looking buildings, taxis, delivery trucks etc. There is an elevated subway running on it as well as a cutaway to an underground subway, then on the far end sort of a christmas land some of the trains go around. The kids don't get shoved through anything and there are a lot of little details to see. Granted its not huge but a lot is packed into the space it takes up. If you have easy access to Metro North and live in Nassau I say why not go, just plan to do something else in the city the same day, like maybe ice skate at nearby Bryant Park or something.

The NYBG show is huge and uses larger scale trains but its always CRAZY packed every year unless you go in the very early days its open. Your kids will get shoved through literally so its harder to appreciate things in it. (Think cattle being pushed though a corral to be slaughtered and thats about how it is going through the show, in theory you can stop at stuff but be prepared to get bumped into a lot doing it). All the buildings are made from natural materials. Its amazing and realistic in its own way but also not.

If you live near Port Jeff, there is an awesome model train display in Belle Terre each year. It's free with the donation of a gift for Toys for Tots, or you can just give a buck or two.
