Tell me about moving OOS
Tell me anything and everything, the good, the bad etc. Any tips for house and job hunting etc... Was the transition difficult. Do you like where you are? DH and I have been talking about this and I know I've made several posts. I'm just afraid of change but I feel like we would have a better lifestyle.

Tell me about moving OOS
I don't have personal experience but a friend of mine is going through this now so I'll share her experience so far... She went down for a week (left her kids home with her parents), stayed with a friend and got to know neighborhoods. She also looked for jobs before she went for the week and scheduled an interview for when she was visiting. She told them she plans on moving and if offered a position she could be there in 3 weeks (2 weeks notice at her current job and a week to pack and stuff). She has a friend that said her and her family can live there until they can find a place to rent
Seems like a good way to do it but if she doesn't get this job she may just try to interview while living in ny until she gets a job offer bc she can't afford to be unemployed indefinitely
It's def going to be hard to prepare for but I do agree that it may be a better lifestyle.

Not personal but I have friends who have done it.
Definitely rent first.
I also would agree that it's a wise idea to have an actual job lined up first.

Re: Tell me about moving OOS
I moved from NY-MD. I have an uncle in MD who helped me find a place (to rent). I went down a few weekends to check out the places. I looked everything up online. I even went into a small precinct near one apartment to ask about it/the area.
Then I moved from MD-FL. I knew NOTHING about where I was moving to. Not one person. Nothing. I found everything online. I knew relatively where I wanted to be (near a certain school), so when looking at apartments I just looked at a map to see the distance. I looked on city data to find out about certain areas. Turns out where I was, was absolutely beautiful. Loved the area.
In both areas, I looked at so many different apartment complexes. In both states, i was able to get an apartment with concrete floors. You do not hear your neighbors...at all! (and there were kids above me). Big decision in choosing which apartment I wanted.
If you are moving to a new area and don't know much about it, I would suggest renting first. Get a feel of the area first before you buy. JMO.
Good luck! Where are you thinking of moving?

Where did you move to?
I think I recall talking to you about Florida, right?
I too may be relocating at some point.

agreed. I would definitely rent first. While I know many people who loved it, others hated their new home and wanted to come back but couldn't.

Re: Tell me about moving OOS
We moved upstate (not OOS, but same idea - 3+ hours away). I would definitely rent first so you can get a feel for the area.
I will be honest and say, 6 years later and I still find myself in transition. I miss my friends and family terribly.
ETA: We moved because my DH got a job here. I am a teacher and have been lucky that I was also able to get a job with the current market.

I also moved upstate.
We have a much better quality of life. Shorter commutes, affordable housing (though our taxes are still high).
8 years later I have finally adjusted. I still have not made friends like I had on LI though and I miss them terribly. But I think making friends in general is hard as an adult, and that I just need to accept it...
Good luck with your decision.

Re: Tell me about moving OOS
I recently moved OOS. We visited a few times and did research and figured out the neighborhoods that we liked... then we did the dumbest thing...
We bough a house with no jobs lined up! But luckily everything fell into place and we are both working and enjoying our new house.
The transition was pretty smooth and pretty hectic all at the same time but well worth it. You would have to drag me back to LI - I love it where I am.
I do like the renting advice. I love where I live and for our price range I know that we got the best deal but there are some other areas I wish we looked at and could have sacrificed the size of the home to be there etc. If i rented first I would have had more time to figure that out. However, I think we made the best decision at the time and I love our new house, neighborhood, friends etc!

Tell me about moving OOS
Rent first. I had never been to Charlotte. We showed up car less, jobless, had found apt online, and knew no one...pregnant as well. All turned out really great. Dh found a job within 2 weeks...7 yrs later still with same company. I have been a sahm for 7 yrs now. We would never move back to NY. We live a nice life. Dh's commute is 4 mins. Kid in a great school.

What an encouraging story!
We moved OOS for DH's job. His job took care of the relocation so I can't comment on that part.
I def. agree with renting first - 100%.
The weeks building up to the move were stressful and emotional. Overwhelming. For us it worked out great in the end and we are very happy. But there were moments, esp. in the beginning, when i missed LI terribly. I still have those feelings sometimes, but less and less frequently.
It is SUCH a difficult decision. Financially for us it was a no-brainer b/c of what DH's job was offering. But emotionally it was still hard.
Best of luck!
ETA: I am probably THE most change-resistant person you can imagine. I am terrified of change. Sometimes I still cannot believe i actually agreed to move! lol Totally unlike me! But seriously sometimes change is a really good thing.

Tell me about moving OOS
Best decision I ever made! It was a very easy transition for us. I would suggest renting first so that you can get an idea of the area. I am a bit crazy and moved here before I had a job lined up. I had been applying to jobs in the area for a while. I got an interview 2 days after moving and hired the next day. I was VERY fortunate! We stayed with friends for a week before we found an apt. We have been here 2yrs now and couldn't be happier.

No experience with this yet, but i am in the same position as you! After tax season (DH is a CPA) we plan on going down to NC to visit family and DH is probably going to set up some interviews while we are there. I am quitting my job next month to be a SAHM and i think this will make it slightly easier for us. However, my worry is, what if DH gets a job and we didn't yet sell our house? We k now that's ultimately where we want to be so we would just buy a house. We can stay with my family if we absolutely had to until we found a house but prefer not to. It's scary just thinking about the transition, but it's for a better quality of life for us and our kids. I think while it will be hectic and very intimidating for a while, in the end it will be completely worth it and things will all fall into place.

Re: Tell me about moving OOS
We love NY....but it's the best decision we did for us. We have been here 6 years and while it has some negatives, the positives outweigh them.
RENT first! Unless you really know the area first, get a feel for what will fit you, your needs, amenities, stores, neighborhoods, job, etc.
