Re: JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
I agree something is shady with JetBlue. Other airlines are flying in and out of NY ok. NY area airports are equipped to handle these temps.
We have friends that were trying to fly back to NY from Orlando last night on JetBlue. They were given no advanced notice of the canceled flight and were told the soonest JetBlue could get them back was Thurs night. However JetBlue was telling all the customers at Orlando that the reason was due to JFK, LGA and EWR being CLOSED. Obviously that was not true at all. It appears they have some other issues outside of safety concerns going on.

While I don't think this is a "conspiracy" per se- I do find it out that other airlines can fly in and out of NY in this cold. Not sure why Jet Blue can't.

And where are the majority of these cancellations? They aren't in New York, and they shouldn't be.
How would you feel if you were going on Vacation to the Dominican Republic and had JetBlue? Delta and United can fly, why can't JetBlue?
DR
Lets say you were going to London. JetBlue does not go to London, but these planes do and look they all left on time! Brrrrr.
London
Even flights to Chicago that seen the majority of cancellations still had flights going. Many airlines were TRYING to help passengers get in the air. Not Jetblue.
Chicago
Taking the kids to Disney? Look how many flights left. Look how many JetBlue cancellations there were.
Orlando
How come these other airlines can run planes but Jetblue can't?
You know where I expect to see tons of cancellations? The south. Texas. Places that don't get this weather normally and don't have the de-icing equipment to keep up with the demand. This shouldn't be happening in New York or anywhere in the northest.
I think you just have issues with Jet Blue. I also don't believe in conspiracy theories.
When you couple record cold temps with high winds, icing conditions, and crazy amounts of snow you'll likely have issues all across the country. It's a domino effect, once other airports get backed up it starts causing delays and problems everywhere else too.
Quite honestly, I'd rather them just cancel a fligh then put me on some icy plane taking off from an icy runway while the wind is blowing the plane everywhere.
Flights get delayed and cancelled, people have to just get over it. It happens. Just like trains get derailed and run behind schedule, just like public transportation isn't always timely, just like there are times where you're stuck in traffic, etc. Shit happens.
People just love to b1tch and moan about everything.........people have zero tolerance anymore.
I have issues with any airline that can't get their act together, when all they are doing lately is banging us with ridiculous fees for everything from a pillow to a meal to a checked bag.
I showed proof that this issue is solely with JetBlue and it hasn't "cascaded" to other airlines. This issue is SOLELY with JetBlue. Other airlines are operating at near normal capacity.
What have you shown? You don't have the stomach to get on a plane during cold weather? You are most definitely welcome to having that opinion. I say cancel YOUR seat and let others who might have been waiting days and are WILLING to fly to get on and get home to their families.
I don't have to "prove" anything. I'm intelligent enough to understand that shit happens in the world and sometimes the reasons as to why a decision was made go beyond the understanding of an angry layperson with a chip on their shoulder.
No sense in going back and forth, you're entitled to your theories. I just don't agree, we can leave it at that.

JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
When jetblue is telling it's customers various airports are closed, I don't think they mean the entire building, just their terminals in the airports.
Regardless if they're hiding something, ill equipped, etc. I'd rather them ground all flights Vs save face and make more money by trying to keep up with their competitors and remain in the air.

Re: JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
I read in an article that JetBlue also paused operations because they didn't want their staff to be out in the bitter cold, especially when having to load luggage, etc. I don't think it's just the weather while in flight, there's a lot of other reasons and I think it's wonderful that they did that.

ITA!
Imagine if they did dismiss their better judgement & god forbid there was a plane crash... then it would be "WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST GROUND ALL THE FLIGHTS? IS MONEY MORE IMPORTANT THAN LIVES?"
It's a double edge sword & again, I'm happy they took the safe, less popular route. (no pun intended)

The bottom line is they don't have enough pilots. It's not the cold. We just flew Delta the other day in Freezing temps out of Michigan. It's VERY cold in many parts of the country all winter, and they manage to fly airplanes just fine.

I'm assuming because of flights that were cancelled and then them having to work more hours to try to get everyone where they need to go after the storms?

Yes! It due to the new FAA rules.

The FAA recently enacted changes regarding pilot hours. I would assume that this is why.

Re: JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
“Delays or cancellations disrupt those handoffs placing crews or planes ‘out of position’ for their flights.” “In the midst of us repairing those schedules disrupted by this week’s winter storms, we’re facing an additional challenge as new FAA rules went into effect for crew rest,” the spokeswoman explained in an email. “These rules further impact our ability to operate an already disrupted schedule, causing our pilots to ‘time out’ even sooner. As a result, additional cancellations are likely to occur as we work to reset the operation.”
But one pilots union is a bit skeptical of the excuse of the FAA’s new rules — those rule changes were announced back in December 2011, ostensibly giving the airline plenty of time to sort things out before they went into effect on Saturday.
“They had two years to anticipate this (work hour rule) and to adjust accordingly,” said the vice president of the Air Line Pilots Association. “So I think it’s overly simplistic to suggest that they could ascribe this disruption — which happens to coincide with this major, major winter snowstorm — and just hang it all on that rule-making change.”

JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
Eh, I'm not too sure. My flight to DC on American Airlines this afternoon was just cancelled. Looks like Jet Blue isn't the only airline. As a frequent flyer, I prefer that the airlines are overly cautious and not lackluster when making these decisions. If there is even the slightest .05% chance of a malfunction due to weather or equipment I am perfectly happy remaining grounded. :)

This pretty much sums it up. Jetblue was simply not prepared for this and are trying to pass the buck on this citing other reasons for the shutdown (or lack of pilots). It had absolutely NOTHING to do with safety.
Jetblue isn't the only game in town anymore if you want TV.
If you get TV on Delta, their TV is significantly better and you get wifi (and i'm not even a fan of Delta).
Southwest is now better than Jetblue in many ways. Two checked bags vs. one is a huge plus. No fee change requests is also big. You get Wifi and TV on basically every flight. And the Southwest rewards program is also superior to Jetblue. The only problem with Southwest is they don't go to many airports yet. But when they do, I can fly out of MacArthur usually and that's a piece of cake.
I'll still fly Jetblue if they are giving me the best deal. But the way they handled this situation was terrible. I feel bad for the families that are now stranded.
This is a great article that better explains the situation.
JetBlue woes
Several days of bad weather and a brief closing of New York's JFK airport on Sunday sparked cascading delays -- and the delays in turn caused JetBlue to run out of available pilots.
JetBlue said it canceled 435 flights Monday, affecting 49,000 passengers, due to new Federal Aviation Administration rules that went into effect last week requiring more rest for pilots between flights.
But some experts say the airline is making excuses by blaming the new rules.
"Tying it to the storm and the FAA is a way to deflect criticism, in my opinion. In reality, I think they simply screwed up," said Mark Murphy, founder of TravelPulse.com. "Case in point: Look at what's happening with other carriers. Same storm? Yes. Same FAA rules going into effect? Yes. Same disruptions? No."
FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown told CNN Tuesday that JetBlue last year requested an extension to the Jan. 4, 2014, work hour rules deadline.
JetBlue was the only airline to request an extension, she said. In October, the FAA sent JetBlue a letter declining that request.
JetBlue is also the only major airline whose pilots do not belong to a union. Union contracts at other airlines frequently have rest requirements that exceed the new rules, so the rules changes do not affect those carriers as much as they would JetBlue.

Same here! DH is 6'8" and he NEEDS to sit in that row. We're glad to pay extra for it. I really love JetBlue. We flew to NoLa last year and had to fly United and American Airlines. United was okay, but the AA flight was a disaster. Or so I heard. I wouldn't know. The flight was overbooked so they offered us an extra night in NoLa, hotel and transportation paid for, a $500 travel voucher, and a bump to a direct JetBlue flight. Some of us took the deal, but unfortunately not everyone in our group could stay.

I agree its not just JB
I deal with traveling co workers all day long. We have had so many employees flying this week that are now grounded. Delta and American are preferred airlines for the company so that is what most are booked on.
We have one girl flying from Chicago to NYC on AA. She is relocating and her flight has been cancelled 10x in the past week so it is def not just JB.
JB is just admitting it.
