4am wake up cries...??

DD is 10 weeks old. Since about 7 weeks she has been going down each night around 10 and sleeping until about 6am. She is swaddled every night before bed and it's worked great. But for the last week she's started to wake up around 4am and try to break free from the confines of the swaddle. I'll give her the pacifier and she'll go back down but not into a deep sleep and she's usually up in a half hour or an hour fighting it.

If I put her in bed with me (unswaddled) in the morning she sleeps great. But in the crib I tried with her arms out after waking at 4am and she was still really fidgety. I know it's not hunger waking her up. I'm wondering if I should stop swaddling her all together. She goes down so well I'm nervous if I stop the swaddle she won't go to sleep as easily.

Thanks!

How do you know it isnt hunger? At 10 weeks that is a long time without a bottle. Maybe she needs to eat at 4-5 instead of 6?

Sounds like hunger. That is a long time for a 10 week old baby to go without food. My 8 month old sometimes wakes up at 3 or 4 and is ravenous. Once she's fed she passes right back out.

Before this week she was sleeping until 6am no problem. So I'd give her a bottle at 6. So even if she needed to eat earlier than 9 I don't think she needs a bottle at 4am. She hasn't woken up for a early morning feeding like that in weeks. Plus I'm starting to go back to work this week so the schedule is all crazy. Trying to figure out how to work the mornings now. It's only been 2 days that she's waited until 9 to eat. And both days she was completely content waiting, except she was either in my bed or in my arms. It's like she just doesn't want to be in her crib after a certain point. Not sure if that makes sense.

Re: 4am wake up cries...??

I have an almost 12 week old and though I know he CAN sleep 7+ hours (because he has blissfully given us a couple stretches of those), at this age I just assume any wake up during the night that is longer than 2 hours from his last feed is because of hunger, and I feed him. They are still so little and even if they aren't waking from hunger, once awake they probably do feel hungry and so feeding them helps them settle and get some more sleep.

I guess I'm just confused because she was sleeping until 6am and now she's waking at 4am. So I feel like we're going backwards a bit, ya know? I have no problem feeding her earlier but I'm nervous to get her into the habit of waking at 4am and getting a bottle. This scheduling can be so confusing! On maternity leave I didn't care, she'd wake and I'd feed her, but now with work I'm finding it tricky to get a routine down.

With infants there are NO guarantees that anything you do will continue exactly as it has. Routines and schedules at 10 weeks might be a bit unrealistic to expect - my 3 month old has had a great nighttime routine but the last few nights he has been waking for a bottle around 2am, so I feed him and I just continue on with my life. You just have to go with the flow and make do the best you can because baby wants what baby wants.

She could be having a growth spurt, or about to have one soon and need the extra food.

My son slept 7+ hours, twice in a row, a week ago. The past 3 nights he has been up every 2-3 hours, starting at midnight. I know it's confusing and hard and I totally get not being able to maintain a regular schedule but we kind of just have to go with it, you know?

I know, you're right. I've been told a bunch of times not to get too "comfortable". Babies have a way of throwing curveballs. I need to just go with it and not get too crazy about the "schedule". I think going back to work has really thrown me and I'm stressing about being able to put her down early so I can get to bed early so I'm not a zombie all day.

4am wake up cries...??

My perfect 730-730 sleeper changed dramatically at 7 months. She stopped napping and she doesn't put herself to sleep any longer and wakes up at 330 or 430 for a bottle once in awhile. Its exhausting but I just go with the flow.

She's hungry!

DS is 11 months old and sleeps until 7:30/8am every day. This morning he woke up screaming at 6am. He was famished. Finished his bottle and went back to sleep for 2 more hours. My point is, babies get hungry!

At 10 weeks, she's definitely hungry. Babies are still growing so much at that age, and her "schedule" is going to change 1,000 more times. You can try giving an extra ounce or 2 at night and see if she goes longer, but she just might not be ready for longer sleep yet. She'll get there again eventually.

My pediatrician told me babies should go aprox 5-6 hours without feedings. So 10-4 would be about right. It's possible she is hungrier now because she doesn't stay as full for as long. She should have had a few growth spurts by now so she might be hungry. (Just a guess.)

My DD STTN for a while as a newborn, and now gets up between 3-4 every night. We had a week or two of waking every few hours when she first learned to get out of her swaddle and when we transitioned to the sleep sac. I would feed her and she would fall right back to sleep.

Honestly be grateful she is waking up only once. That is awesome for 12 weeks!!! At 6 months we are up at least 3 times a night and Im a FTWM.
