Swallowing meats

DS is doing much better with his eating. Still picky and has his texture issues, but as he gets older he's at least trying a bit more (thanks to bribery). LOL!

I've added a lot more food to his list from about a year ago. WHen he was 3 he was still on some babyfood. Now he's 100% off, but the meats are still tough. I don't really make much red meats. Chicken is tough. He will chew and chew till it's liquid and doesn't swallow it all. I notice after dinner sometimes he still has chicken in his mouth. I cut it up small and I give him something to dip it in. I also have him drink water to get it down. Just makes more liquid in his mouth.
I let his speech therapist know at his preK class last night. She gave me tips that I do already and we set up a time to call.
Just wondering if there's any other tips or suggestions that can help.

Thanks!

Re: Swallowing meats

are you giving him the breast meat? DS is not a good meat eater...except for pork. I tried and tried and tried to get him to eat chicken, nuggets, cutlets, dipping. Then one day he saw daddy eating the chicken leg and he wanted to try too. Now that is all he will eat. The dark meat. It has a different texture than the white and according to DH at least, is the only part that people should eatChat Icon Chat Icon

Swallowing meats

DD is a horrible eater and has a ton of textural issues, too chewy, too wet, too cold, etc. When she started to eat meats she did the same thing by "squirreling" in her mouth. What helped us in the beginning was pairing the meat with a crunchy food so she would chew more with the crunchy and then swallow. Like we did a piece of chicken, a piece of pretzel/chip, and so on and so on. It was quite annoying and probably not to healthy but it worked. We slowly worked out the pretzel/chip portion and how she is a chicken/turkey champ.

My son had a huge problem with meats when he was little. Have you looked at his tonsils to see if they are enlarged? My son had HUGE tonsils. He received therapy for 6 years before anyone even thought to check out his tonsils, and only did so because of his adenoids. Once he got them out, he didn't have any more problems eating meats or other foods since he could actually swallow so much easier, and he stopped drooling excessively.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to wait and see after I speak with his Speech Therapist too. I will try the crunchy too bc he does well with that.
He doesn't have big tonsils. We had that checked as well when he wasn't eating when he was younger. He has outgrown some issues, but still has some texture and food issues.
