opinions on patchogue?
Hey guys! I'm new to lifamilies but have been lurking and am a former liweddings bride!
Anyway DH and I have been house hunting and patchogue is one town that is affordable. There are a couple houses here we like and are thinking about making an offer. I hear mixed things about it everything from bad schools; tough town, dangerous area- to its a place with lots of young families, its on the upswing, its the next Huntington village, great place to invest in, becoming more desirable. So... I'm torn, we can get more for our money here, but is it worth it?
So id like to here from people who live or have lived here. Also id like to hear outside opinions to get an idea of what outside views of the town are.
Thanks!

opinions on patchogue?
I live in Patchogue and I love it. The downtown area is great. I do not have school age children so I cannot help you there. I feel that it is on the upswing. I live just east of 112 by Main Street. I have not had any issues, its a quiet area, nice neighbors.

I'm so impressed with how much development and improvements have been made. I have visited Patchogue village a lot lately for business related things and it looks beautiful! I do not live there so I have no first hand knowledge about the schools.

Re: opinions on patchogue?
I don't live in Patchogue, but I have spent a significant amount of time there (why I couldn't tell you...I really live nowhere near it). I know that a lot of developments have been made in the area. I was there on Main Street not too long ago, and I was surprised to see how many restaurants there are.
I do know people who live in Patchogue, and they have said they are happy. I would absolutely not call Patchogue "dangerous."

opinions on patchogue?
I think it's a changing area. I love the village. It has come a long way. I also love some of the old houses.
Schools might make me think twice but I know plenty of people who get great educations in not so great schools

opinions on patchogue?
I'm in N. Patchogue and have lived in the area for most of my life. I had a great education and tons of opportunities. I do think there were a rough few years in certain areas that really took a tole on the reputation of the area. However, we're very happy here and like you mentioned, know a lot of really nice young families particularly down in the village. I think the negative reputation has really fueled a lot of the improvement efforts.
The affordability and low taxes are huge for us. It's what has allowed me to be a SAHM for the time being which is priceless. DD is not in school yet but I look forward to utilizing the UPK program which from what I hear is easy to get into. The budget passes year after year which is a big plus. My main concern is that the test scores are not great so that's something I will keep an eye on. We love the library here, the beaches, the parks, and the downtown. We plan to stay in our house another 5 years or so and then hope to find something bigger. I will definitely consider staying here but of course we'll make that decision when we're actually ready to move.

Re: opinions on patchogue?
Thanks for all of the responses! It is very helpful to hear unbiased opinions. Are there any specific areas that are more desirable or should stay away from? Does paying village taxes really offer great benefits? I'm a bit surprised by how high the taxes are because with village they are 10000 on 2 houses were considering and their not huge houses, 3bd 2 ba. But I know Long Island is high everywhere just seems high for the town.

Re: opinions on patchogue?
We just sold our home in Medford mainly due to the fact that we did not want our dd going to pat-med. I know to many ppl who have been very unhappy with the district. Many families we hung out with took their children out of the school n put them in holy angles. *not a option for us to pay school taxes and then have to pay tuition to send kids to private school* When we 1st bought the home i thought it would be ok i had cousins that went to pat-med but apparently since then it has changed for the worse, My aunt sent all 3 of her kids there but when it came time for her grandson to go she pulled him out in 2nd grade, She was so unhappy and could not believe how much the district has changed
I do not have any of my own experience since DD would be starting school there next year but i trust the opinons of the ppl I became friends with and family that had to send there kids there and that was enough for us to sell and move... Good luck with whatever u do.

Re: opinions on patchogue?
I lived there for 5 years and I really loved it. I was right down on the water in a better part of the neighborhood. However, I never heard anything great about the school district so I always planned to move before having kids (or kids of school age). There are some not so great areas that I would avoid. I loved how much they were building up downtown, so thats a plus!

Re: opinions on patchogue?
Also...as for the schools, I'd recommend looking on Newsday. The site lists the middle schools and high schools as "in good standing," and a few of the elementary schools are on the "local assistance plan."

Do you mind sharing which elementary schools it was that they were unhappy with?

opinions on patchogue?
I love it. DH and I rented in Patchogue on the water for a couple of years and loved it so much we decided to buy. DH wants to sell when we have kids going to school but I really don't see the need to. I grew up in a town nearby and knew plenty of people that graduated from Pat-Med and they had no problems and are successful now. I think the town is changing so much and for the better.

Born and raised in Patchogue.
I work in east Patchogue and DH has his own business in Patchogue. So for us it is a great place to live.
We do not have children I am not sure how the school district is since we have graduated.

I am not certain what school he went to but they live pretty close to Briarcliffe college. Not sure if that helps you. Like border of blue point and Patchogue line. I think.

Re: opinions on patchogue?
We bought in Patchogue. We know many young families that have also just recently bought here. I think it is on the upswing. I love that Main St has tons of new restaurants, a hopping night life, and they are still building and developing. There is so much potential here, and I hope it continues. I also love the location itself as I feel Patchogue is central to many places.
I personally would avoid East Patchogue and Medford. I think these are the areas people are talking about that give Patchogue the bad rap.
I'm unsure of the school district, but have cousins that are in the school district and love it. I also have many successful cousins who have graduated from Pat/Med. I have a lot of family in the area.
However, with the affordability, Dh and I are considering private school when the time comes. This is something we would always prefer for our DC, regardless of where we lived, and living in Patchogue happens to make it more of a possibility bc our taxes are low.
