I just heard that he struggled with drugs when younger, but stayed sober for over 20 years, until last year and then he checked himself into rehab. So sad!
Such a loss of talent!

The news was just talking about tainted heroin, I wonder if that had anything to do with his death.
So tragic. He was a talented actor.

I read yesterday that his girlfriend kicked him out 3 months ago because of his addiction.
My heart breaks for her that this was the outcome

No - he just has the means to buy a few days supply at one time.
I doubt he was dealing- even though he wasn't super famous he would have been recognized pretty quickly.

50 bags of heroin is far from a dealer. Thats a week supply for a avid user. Many addicts use 10 bags a day or more sometimes. Unfortunatley I know too much about Herion. I have a family member battaling this addiction now. and know of a few others.

Just incredibly sad. He was a brilliant actor but from everything I hear he was a really good person too. Such a senseless tragedy.

I usually don't get too down about celebrity deaths, but this one I just can't stop thinking about. Maybe since I work in theatre? Maybe because he never seemed like a 'celebrity'? I don't know.
I feel like we saw him really flourish in various characters...characters with such depth and complexity to them. It's so hard to think that he's not around anymore to gift us with anything else. I always looked forward to everything he was in, even if it was a genre that I typically don't watch (Mission: Impossible III, for example).
He really was one of the great actors of our time.

He was only found because he was LATE picking up his kid- which means if he didn't die, he would've picked up his kid STONED.
I agree that it's a shame, but this is no tragedy in my book. He did this to himself and the only people I feel for are his beautiful children!
There is no question that he was a brilliant actor, but in the end what does that mean?
Very sad!

CNN reported that they arrested 4 people in connection with the drug sale and recovered another 350 bags! Ugh this is just horrible. I know drug addition is a disease but I have ZERO sympathy for drug dealers of any kind. I hope they rot.

They should be. Also, I am under the impression that most dealers don't use- they're 'businesspeople' and they don't want to get hooked on their own inventory. They take advantage of addicts so they should be charged accordingly.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's funeral will be a small private affair for just family and a few friends, a spokesman said today.
The family is also planning a memorial service for later in the month, which will be held in New York City.
According to a statement from Hoffman's publicist, the family has planned a private funeral service for family and close friends of the actor on Friday in New York City.
"In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Phil's name to two charities that were very close to his heart: The DreamYard Project (http://dreamyard.com/) and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (www.christopherreeve.org)," the statement read. "The family wishes to thank everyone for their continued support and good wishes."
Broadway theaters will also dim their lights to pay tribute to Hoffman tonight.

DreamYard is a great organization- they teach kids to write and perform poetry in inner city schools. I used to work with their teaching artists when I taught in the Bronx.

A session saxophonist who’s played on records by David Bowie, Mick Jagger and others has reportedly been arrested in connection with the heroin-related death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
According to the New York Post, Robert Vineberg was arrested in a Manhattan drug den last night along with three other suspected dealers. Allegedly, the actor, who died of an overdose over the weekend, had purchased heroin from the suspects a while back.
The New York Post notes that Vineberg records under the name Robert Aaron. According to his LinkedIn page, the New York City musician has played with Bowie (he’s listed on the credits of the ‘Let’s Dance’ album), Jagger (‘Goddess in the Doorway’), Blondie, Amy Winehouse and others. In 2010, he released a solo album called ‘Trouble Man.’
During a raid of three apartments last night, police reportedly found 350 envelopes containing what looked like heroin. While none of them had the Ace of Spades stamp found on the packets that were located near Hoffman’s body, a tip led police to the 57-year-old Vineberg and his associates.
After the arrest, Vinegerg was asked if he sold heroin to Hoffman. “No, I did not,” he replied.
The 46-year-old Hoffman, roundly credited as being one of the finest actors of his generation, was found Sunday morning, reportedly with a needle in his arm and more than 50 envelopes of heroin near his body. He relapsed a couple years ago after beating various addictions in his 20s. In addition to roles in ‘Moneyball,’ ‘The Big Lebowski’ and ‘Capote’ (for which he won an Oscar), Hoffman played music critic Lester Bangs in the 2000 movie ‘Almost Famous.’

I'm glad they got the dealer.
But sadly if this was just your typical dad that overdosed I highly doubt they would've went looking for him. I know when a friends brother OD'd the cops never went looking for anyone.
They need to do more of this to hopefully get control of it.

I agree that it's a shame, but this is no tragedy in my book. He did this to himself and the only people I feel for are his beautiful children!
There is no question that he was a brilliant actor, but in the end what does that mean?
