Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
I met my obgyn for first time Tuesday. He was weird and direct.
I will be 9-10 weeks when I fly to Miami and go on a cruise. He said fly to Miami but don't get on the cruise. The only thing we could get put of him as to why, is that god forbid something happens, the doctors there are not helpful. He added, that nothing could likely be done anyway if something did happen. I knew this beforehand and I accept it.
I know my risks with norovirus (I had it last year from an airplane ride).
I won't eat foods I can't, or off the ship. I have no excursions set up - just planning to be by pool n beach.
Thoughts?

Re: Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
Never went on a cruise, but as you know we went to Jamaica around the time I was 6-7 weeks. My doctor (both OBGYN and RE), had no issues and just said to stay hydrated, avoid foods I normally would, don't stay in the sun for too long, I was also on prog suppositories and lovenox at the time and all was fine.
I would call the regular doctor again and see if there are any other concerns. The only "doctor" we had near by anywhere was a nurse station in our resort, no idea where hospital was or any of those details.

Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
I went on a cruise three days after finding out I was pregnant (I was about 5.5 weeks). My doctor did not give me any additional restrictions. If I could do it over again I would skip the cruise-I had the worst sea sickness coupled with morning/all day sickness-thankfully, I had zofran.

Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
I went on a cruise at the height of my MS - around 11w or so (preggo brain... can't remember lol). I was barely eating anything and throwing up all the time before we left. I was so nervous! I brought sea bands, unisom & vitamin b6, Dramamine... pretty much everything safe for a preggo to take for nausea. Didn't need a single thing! I felt amazing on the cruise! It was like the slight rocking of the ship cured my MS. And then the day after the cruise ended... MS came back!
I told my Dr. I was going on a cruise... he said have fun! -- and I'm high risk.
ETA: Not sure if it matters but I did 7 days on NCL Breakaway out of NY to Bermuda.
ETAA: I went snorkeling off a catamaran, got stuck in an elevator during an excursion in Bermuda, and did pretty much anything that didn't have a pregnancy restriction.

Re: Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
I just flew to Miami and went on a cruise last week at 23 weeks. Dr was fine with it. Don't worry! Have fun..just be aware..certain cruise lines don't allow pregnant women on past 24 weeks.. Not sure when you are planning to go..

Same thing for me. We had a big European cruise planned and I got PG right before we left. I had no morning sickness when we left but it hit two days into cruise. I made the best of the trip, but it wasn't that fun. The heat bothered me so sitting out didn't go well. I have been on many cruises and never got sea sick. My morning sickness was worse on the boat. As soon as cruise ended we stayed in Spain for a few days and while I had morning sickness still I actually felt much better on land. If your not having morning sickness I think you will be fine. My doctor only told me to avoid certain foods and make sure I get up and stretch my legs on my 7 hour flight. Stay hydrated very important. You will be fine. That Norwalk virus is bad on the cruises hips now. I would avoid the buffet bar and wash your hands a lot.

Re: Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
Literally 2 days I found out I was PG we were leaving on a cruise to Europe. My doctor wasn't thrilled but he said don't cancel the trip. He basically said to try to stay away from all the smokers (since we were going to be in Europe), don't eat any soft cheeses and sausage. He also said if God forbid I bleed to see a doctor ASAP. All was well. Do what you feel is best. Drink lots of (bottled) water and take it easy.

Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
My ob advised against it in the first trimester and told me to reschedule my cruise for a little further into my pregnancy. He didn't want me in the sun as much and said there's too many people in a tight place when cruising- many from other countries that don't follow the same vaccinations as us, and people getting on/off the ship in other countries. He said too much of a chance of contracting an illness that could increase chance of miscarriage so early on. He scared me so much that I rescheduled till week 26.. I can't wait to finally go on that cruise in 2 weeks!!

What cruise line? B/c I'm pretty sure most of the big ones (if not all) will not let you on beyond 24w.

Yup I believe you can't hit 24w at any point in your cruise. So you can cruise up until you hit 23w6d I think.

Re: Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
I went on a cruise during my first trimester. My doctor wasn't thrilled with it but also didn't tell me I should cancel.
I was prepared with all the meds I was allowed to take and a box of saltine crackers. She did tell me to stay away from the fresh fruits and vegetables especially on the islands and do not use any hot tubs or Jacuzzis.
The trip was fun. I was lucky enough not to have any morning sickness though.

Re: Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
i was planning a cruise when i was pregnant with DD but it fell through i spoke to my doctor about it and she just warned that motion sickness combined with morning sickness could make me very unhappy on the ship. if you/your doctor are concerned with medical issues, maybe see if the cruise ship has an ultrasound machine on board? i know from personal experience they have xray machines but not sure about ultrasounds.

I went on a cruise with DD1 when I was very newly pregnant (I didn't even know yet but was about 5 weeks) and with DD2 when I was around 20 weeks. No issues either time.

Pregnancy Celebrity Cruises cannot accept guests who will have entered their 24th week of pregnancy by the beginning of, or at any time during the cruise or Cruisetour. A physician's "Fit to Travel" note is required prior to sailing, stating how far along (in weeks) your pregnancy will be at the beginning of the cruise and confirming that you are in good health and not experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. The "Fit to Travel" note should be faxed to the Access Department at 1-954-628-9622. If you have already booked a cruise or Cruisetour and do not meet this requirement, please call us at 1-866-592-7225 or email us here.
ETA: I believe they do this b/c after 24 weeks is the age of viability and god forbid something happens, they do not have the ability to do anything. It's a precaution they take. Also, I've heard that sometimes they will not accept dr's notes even if you are earlier than 24w but it depends on the cruise. I just remember reading this on cruise critic.

Spinoff to vacation - cruising in first tri
Michelle, I am Pregnant with twins and cruised when I was 10-11 weeks. My OB was fine with it. We had fun! I snorkeled, went on some small water slides in Aruba (not the big ones, obviously, like the kid ones haha), hung out in the pool and ate :) it was a blast. I'd talk to your OB more

And actually I just reviewed Carnival's policy and it's also 24 weeks.. I think my doctor kind of worked around it.. She wrote on there that she read their cruise policy for pregnancy and that I met the guidelines and am healthy and fit to travel.. I confirmed already that her note is acceptable and they said yes, but I am double checking again today.
