When do big entire class or just the same sex birthday parties end?

DS is in first grade and it seems to me that the big style of huge parties are ending. He has been invited to some from his class, but mostly it is our existing friends kids and boys from the neighborhood. Do people still have large birthday parties by 2nd grade or is it mostly a few friends going to the movies or someplace special?

I actually find the opposite to be true and DS is also in first grade. He's been invited to more class parties this year than ever before and even the girls parties where in the past it was mostly only boys. My friends have kids in other first grade classes and same has held true there. Maybe you just got lucky this year ha! This past weekend alone we had THREE parties!

I find it varies by class. Last year in K my younger son had hardly any whole class parties. Now in 1st grade he has more - new kids, new ways of doing it.

I never did whole class parties but many people did. MY older son is in 3rd grade and what I am seeing - it slowed down to one sex in 2nd grade (some in 1st but still half and half there) and then in third grade most aren't doing or just a few friends to the movies and stuff like that type parties.

My DS is also in first grade. this year I was originally telling him he could only invite the boys in his class to his party,. But then he he decided on a place that was more reasonable in price and we had it over christmas break so I assumed a higher NO rate than normal so he was allowed to invite his whole class and a few outside friends (total list was about 30)

My plan is allow him one more year with a party, probably only boys though. THen by 3rd grade he will be old enough to make a choice of a small event to do with his close friends, or go away or get a larger gift etc.
