Don't know about gastric sleeve but my BFF had the lap band... She lost about 60 pounds then plateaued around 230 / lost the other 40 a few years later with weight watchers.

Re: Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Thanks for replying, Jessica. Is she restricted with things she can eat with the lap band? That's one of my concerns. Like, is this person going to want to eat something so bad, but can't. I feel like that would be depressing.

With the lap band you can eat anything....you will either get sick or end up "eating through the band".

Gastric Sleeve Surgery
it's all about your body after the surgery. i know several people who can't stomach any foods - like barely eat anything except for a select foods. then others have just ate what they always ate and stretched their stomachs back out or vomiting constantly.
best bet is to get the consultation and go to a support group to get the real information. Personally, i would go to a therapist of OA group prior to the surgery because the main issue is why you overeat.

This, the thing with the lap band is that it "shrinks" the stomach slowly, and can be re-opened. She never NOT eats something, but the thing they warned her about was not drinking and eating at the same time ... I don't remember why though.

Did she have it released? That's the benefit of the lap band is that it's all done in increments and you can have some of the saline removed from the band during times like pregnancy.

She has the sleeve not the band.

Personally, i would go to a therapist of OA group prior to the surgery because the main issue is why you overeat.
I know one person who did it because she admitted she didn't have the discipline to lose weight on her own. But to go through the surgery and live with it requires discipline as well, and I think for people like that it's a waste or a recipe for disaster.
The importance of changing the mind along with the body cannot be understated. It has taken me years to get to the right frame of mind, much longer than it took to lose the weight. You just don't get that kind of time when it's a relatively quick surgery and recovery.

Re: Gastric Sleeve Surgery
See, that's the thing. This person has been overweight their whole life. Have tried all different kinds of diets, diet pills, working out, etc and they do take weight off. But, then they stop doing whatever they're doing (they, themselves, say that their appetite is just too huge) and put the weight back and then some. I've voiced my concerns to them and they say that they need the surgery as a tool to help them.
Thanks again for all the replies!!

Gastric Sleeve Surgery
My understanding is that all bariatric doctors require their patients to go for at least a psych consult.

Re: Gastric Sleeve Surgery
My cousin had it done (we are as close as sisters) and I am not going to lie, for the first 6-9 months she had a really difficult time. A lot of food would make her physically ill and she felt really sick. It's been about a year and a half now and she looks great and feels fine most of the time. There are things she still can't eat and she can only eat very small portions at a time (although frequent meals) but she is doing very well now and is happy.

Re: Gastric Sleeve Surgery
I'm pretty sure this is what one of my close friends had done. It removed part of her stomach. She's great! She looks great and feels a lot better. She is a very disciplined person though. She was never that over weight. It was just a high stress job and life situation, eating whatever was convenient. She's a little older too so it was harder for her to lose.
I think she can eat everything now. Her portion sizes are very small and she's not frequently hungry.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery
I have a friend that had it done. He is doing really well on it. Losing the weight has helped him start being physically active (it was too difficult for him before due to pain) and he eats better now.
