Re: Kindergarteners caught having sex in classroom

I'm a teacher but I'll leave it to the elementary teachers to comment about the teacher POV as I'm high school.

However, I just have to say, we need to all actually read this article before getting too upset here. They only SAID they were having sex. They could have been standing there naked picking their noses.

Yes it's upsetting that they were naked but I think it's getting a bit blown out of proportion without evidence that they did anything. (Obviously that would be a different story.)

I would imagine it's biologically impossible for a 5 year old boy to get an erection or am I wrong?

DS was a couple of weeks old when DH was changing his diaper and he excitedly called me into the room to show me that our son "had a woody!" Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with you that they only said they were having sex, but I think what most posters are concerned about here is the fact that the 5 year olds knew that "sex" coincides with being naked. My DS is almost 5 and has no idea what the word sex means or that it has any association with being naked. I'm not even sure if he's ever even heard the word sex before quite honestly. I would be concerned to know how the children associated being naked with "having sex". It does seem curious and I'd be questioning the parents of both children.

teachers aren't allowed in the bathroom with my 5yr old so unsupervised pee break doesn't surprise me really. "Sex" is just what it is.. im sorry but I do NOT show my daughter sexual content of any kind (call me a prude) but she knows EXACTLY what it is and the positions involved. Someone tell me how that happened? She point blank ASKED me about it. I said what do you mean by 'frucking' and she SHOWED me! I can't unlearn her. But I can educate her on what is and isn't appropriate.

We've had our talks, she knows NO ONE is allowed to see her 'butt' (her words) and she can NEVER take her clothes off or anyone unless I am there or daddy. That includes the doctors. NO ONE sees you naked! She freaked out once and tattled because 3 girls in her prek class were in the bathroom trying on each other's clothes.. I mean ALL clothes down to undies! Teacher walked into a pile of clothes and 3 giggling girls.

I think we need to be clear on what 'sex' was in this case. We need to know why so much ruckus was going on this class. We need more facts.

I'm not saying the homes are safe
I'm not saying the school wasn't wrong

I'm saying we need more info.

Fact is we can't shield our kids. I have an only child. I control her intake but the reality is I can't control what her friends at school and afterschool show or tell her. I can't control the other kindergarteners older siblings from talking and it getting to her. I can't control the public. I just have to educate her. Pretending my 5yr can't understand, shouldn't understand or won't be exposed would be my fault.

Seriously??? My boys are 5 and have no idea what "f*cking" is. And I like it that way! They are babies.

In our home, our kids just know that the term "f*cking" means you have a "potty mouth." Chat Icon Chat Icon

Your 5 year old SHOULDN'T know what sex is, nor positional details!!!!!! That isn't shielding her, it's exposing her to far too much far too soon. And I would be looking for the source of said information because it points in some negative directions. I have a 6 going on 7 DS and he knows nothing about sex, nothing about vagina's only that he is to be naked in front of no one and no one is to touch him on any part of him that is considered private.

ETA you should be very careful about what you put on the internet….many people here are mandated to report something they may see as sexual abuse….and if you are stating this for shock value, then you are opening a can of worms I am for certain you don't want opened. Just sayin'!

this is interesting. My 7 yr old has no idea what sex is, positions or anything.

Mine either and I would be very concerned if he did. He knows what a penis and a vagina is and that boys and girls are different and babies come out of the moms vagina, but knows noting of sex or fruking!!!!
As others have said it is definitely possible for a baby boy to get an erection, let alone a 5 yr old.
And I agree them saying they had sex, doesn't necessarily mean anything actually happened

I'm sorry but I was thinking about this thread all night.

If I found out that my 5yo knew about sex and positions, I would be at the ped immediately and would get her to a child psychiatrist right away. Something is very wrong there. Chat Icon

Kindergarteners caught having sex in classroom

I'd be a little concerned if my child referred to it as "f*cking", but there are plenty of parents out there who are very matter of fact with their children when it comes to questions about reproduction, and many books out there that are geared at kids that don't sugar coat things. One of these kids may have had a talk with Mom or Dad the day before and was discussing their new "knowledge". I wouldn't assume criminality or abuse right off the bat.

ITA. And the post is saying that these are the things the daughter picked up elsewhere. I'm sure she asked where she learned that and I'm assuming from relevance to the topic of this thread, that her daughter learned it from other kids in school.

I'm always yelling at my dh that he needs to be mindful of the kids when he is watching certain violent movies. A lot of movies have brief sex and nudity even when that isn't what the movie is "about". I would probably assume a kid saw sex on tv. Or maybe even stumbled on porn, which is horrifying, but I certainly remember being a nosy kid that looked through everyone's crap- and sometimes stumbling on stuff that I later realized had to do with sex.

As for the article, the teacher WAS doing her job. That's why she FOUND them. It's so ridiculous to think that a teacher's eyes can be on all children at all times. It's just not how it is.

soryy but when a teacher takes on their position especially with 5 yr olds they are agreeing to be accountable for all kids under their care. Unacceptable any other way. So basically it was OK that avonte left his room too since teachers can't watch them all? Oh, and my stance isn't far fetched since the dept of ed did take her out.

Kindergarteners caught having sex in classroom

I just want to say this and I don't want to keep harping on it. This is in regards to the original post and the article, not the other user's post in regards to her DD (I don't want to touch that cause I don't know the details):

Kids are nosy and curious. Maybe a child stumbled upon sexual content on their own or found out from other classmates or older a sibling / cousin etc.; that CAN most certainly be the case. But parents please don't ever dismiss something as innocent exposure or an innocent act until you thoroughly investigate. Although it could be nothing, just make sure it ISN'T something.

Something like a child taking their clothes off and engaging another child, regardless, if they did anything and refer to it as sex CAN be a sign of sexual abuse. An abused child will act out or repeat acts done to them. As disgusting and horrifying as it may be. A lot times adults won't go there or think it's possible because like anything else, no one wants to think this can happen to their child.

I know this is a scary subject, but a lot of times children get abused for years before a parent/adult finds out or the child is strong enough to say something. :(

And as far as the theory about one of the parents being open with the child about his/her body, ok fine. But that's why I keep saying the parents should be questioned as well! If my kid was on the receiving end of this because a kid's parent is pen with their child THEN I would want to know this is why it happened. This would also help me to talk with my child about the incident described in the article.

I also think that if you are going to be that open with your child then the child also needs to know not to share that info with other children, especially if they are 5 years old. What you are comfy with telling your kids does NOT mean Janie's mom and her family share such details. I would be open with answering questions about the body with my child but I don't think he needs to know that sex is when the Penis enters the Vagina at his current age.
But that's my choice as a mom.

My son knows the terms penis and vagina and he knows not to say those word because it makes people uncomfortable and some of his classmates may not know what that is yet. He doesn't use it but knows that penis is the name of his private part.

ETA: atrocious wording from mobile

So when the teacher went to the bathroom to find the two kids, who was watching the other kids? When the teacher is hunched over a desk helping a kid trace a letter for 30 seconds, who is watching the other kids? Idk if all classes have a para now, but when I was a kid, we were 25 alone with the teacher. Also, your always nasty tone has become a point of humor here on LIF. What is your hang-up?

It's funny, when we talk about parenting and the mishaps our kids get into, sometimes causing injuries, everyone runs in and says, "Oh, you can't be expected to have your eye on them every minute!"

But when it's a teacher, even a teacher with a para, who has 24-25 kids (so 12 kids per adult) we say, "Well, that teacher needs to know what every kid is doing at every second!"

And I wonder how a parent would react to a teacher walking into a bathroom to check on a kid when s/he is peeing. I can see that being a shitshow because the teacher invaded the kid's privacy.

The teacher's always at fault, automatically, as far as some are concerned. Chat Icon

sorry but i think waiting to talk to your kids about sex at 12 and 13 esp. now a days is way too late.

Do you know how much they know by then and what they are doing?

i remember when i was in middle school (i graduated in 2000) there was some rumor going around some kid i like was having sex with his girlfriend was it true who knows but i wasnt shocked to hear and i didnt have to ask my parents what sex was at that age i knew.

while 5 is a little young to be having a sex talk i dont think waiting till 12 or 13 is the right move. cause if you dont tell them by then someone else has.

I don't know about all your kids but we always joke that my son is a Chippendale. When I tell that boy "take your clothes off to shower", I swear he is naked in like 20 seconds. Im talking fully clothed, and in that time he manages to rip all his clothes off and put them in the hamper and come out stark naked with his towel. Our little Magic Mike still amazes us Chat Icon

So there is a chance they weren't in there for that long.

It's just not how it is.

soryy but when a teacher takes on their position especially with 5 yr olds they are agreeing to be accountable for lall kids under their care. Unacceptable any other way. So basically it was OK that avonte left his room too since teachers can't watch them all? Oh, and my stance isn't far fetched since the dept of ed did take her out.

I have been in many kindergarten classrooms and there is a very big difference between letting an autistic boy run out if a building and not noticing that 2 kindergarteners are in the bathroom at the same time, considering the bathroom is in the classroom. One child could have asked permission and the other could have just went in. It's not like a teacher is sitting in front of the room and the kids are all in rows so she can see everything at all times. If she is helping a small group in the carpet she will not have her eye on all the kids at all times. Besides the fact that these kids are five and who would ever imagine that they were in the bathroom doing that!

good to hear bc I thought my dd would be asking me any day now since reading this post and I was just not ready or the birds and the bees. We were talking about this at work nd we were thinking like 12/13. I really don't remember.

I think it's naive to think you have until 12/13 for that talk. I am in my 40s and I knew about the birds and the bees before that. I don't know the exact moment, but I know it was around 9 or 10 that I started asking my mom where babies came from and she told me, using age appropriate information.

I feel like no one has addressed the possibility that there are also children who may have walked in on their parents and are trying to mimic what they saw. Not all knowledge about sex necessarily comes from abuse. Also, I think many parents are far more open and scientific than they used to be.

My DD 7 doesnt know anything about sex but I have provided scientific answers on a need to know basis when she has asked where babies come from and she knows where they come out of because she has asked and I don't believe in telling them fairy tales.

As far as when they should know these thing I don't know the exact age but I think that it should be an evolving conversation but 12/13 is definitely too late. They should know about this stuff before middle school IMO otherwise they will get misinformation from their peers.

Yes this is WAY too late.

When I was 13 (20+ years ago) there was a "couple" in my social circle who had sex. And these were not kids with absentee parents who got into trouble--I'm sure their parents would be appalled if they knew!
