That depends on time of day and how busy the streets are, but ultimately, probably not.
I do have a 10 year old son and I struggle with the "how much freedom" thing almost daily.
2:40 pm and streets are not that busy. I spoke to 2 of the parents that said yes. The girls have a project to do. DD has been begging for Instagram which I said no to. But I think I'm gonna let her do this one.
Let us know how it goes. I think I need a kick in the a$$ when it comes to cutting the cord! Like someone else said, it's more about everyone else and not so much about my kid. I can't control the unknown and that scares me.
It went fine! We went over safety rules again. She called me from her friends phone as soon as she got there. I actually had to step out of a meeting to answer so that was a 1st for me as well. I feel like my little girl is growing up! She was very happy and proud of herself too. She and the girls she was with are pretty mature.
I showed up ½ hour earlier than I thought I would and spied on her!
I had to do this for a bunch of reasons:
1. Doing a lot of reading on hyper and helicopter parenting, coddling etc
2. I'm convinced that doing the above creates anxiety and stress in both parent and child
3. Part of my argument to saying no to IG is that it's not a good way to socialize. I work FT and she doesn't get to socialize outside of school (after school is til 5:30) much. If this is one way to do it why not let her?
4. I thought back to when I was 10. Yes "times were different" but I don't know statistically by how much.
5. I'm trying to raise my children to be independent and responsible in all kinds of ways
6. I think this gives a child confidence

I have a very responsible 9.5 year old DD and I would not let her walk to the library alone at this age. More fear of everyone else out there then her behavior. Maybe we are too conservative but I am just now letting her ride her bike around 1 block with another friend, and I wait outside for them to return.
Not alone it was 3 of them

I'm glad! i think you did the right thing. It was day time and you knew she could do it. Our perception of danger can be debilitating if we don't keep it in check.. Its not easy, but its important to give our children a chance to prove themselves to us and to them.

Well, my son's short lived freedom is over ( before it ever started, really.). There was an attempted abduction in my neighborhood. Back to supervised outdoor activities.
