turkey baster method?
hi ladies, i'm a not-so-regular poster in hiding. This makes em uncomfortable so fusing a second screenname.
DH and I have been trying for a while with no results. he always joked that we should use a turkey baster. recently, i did some research and imagine my surprise when it is an actual method! (with a syringe and not a turkey baster of course)
dh is completely on board with following this plan. I am a bit uncomfortable.
Any words of advice? anyone try it and have it work? if so, how soon?
TIA
an embarrassed poster

turkey baster method?
I would NOT do anything like this on my own. If you have been trying for 1 year (under 35) or 6 months (35 +), then it's time to see a specialist - I recommend that you speak with an RE (reproductive endocrinologist). They can do IUI (a much more sanitary, safe, technical and productive version of what you are discussing) in office using STERILE equipment and cleaning the semen. I am not as familiar with this, but I know there are a number of girls on here who can give you better info.
I definitely wouldn't do any invasive procedure (which is basically what you're doing there) at home. The risk of infection is just way too high.

turkey baster method?
turkey baster = ICI. Not sure why this would work better than BD for a hetero couple? Unless you are getting donor sperm. Anyway, from what i have been reading here & elsewhere, it's pretty pointless and a waste of $$ because of the % of time it works -- so go for the IUI @ an RE

I would imagine that having the spermies touching multiple surfaces would also harm them... If you haven't tried things like pre-seed, I'd try that first.

I've never even heard of this but honestly I would never do it myself. I have been doing IUI with an RE. I would totally recommend that you see a specialist and be under the direct care of them. You don't want to risk getting an infection or anything.

Re: turkey baster method?
I would recommend you go to a RE and discuss IUI. I don't know anything about the "turkey baster method" but I would imagine the baster not going in much further than just normal . With an IUI they insert a cathether directly into the uterus so the sperm is already past the major hurdle of the cervix. IUI worked for me (not on the first try, but on the 2nd). If you have been trying for a while consider seeing a specialist because there are so many more issues as to why you might not be getting pregnant than the sperm not getting to where they have to be.
Good Luck!

Re: turkey baster method?
I have heard people who don't know the actual term IUI call it the Turkey Baster. Is that what you are referring to?
I would first go to your OBGYN and bring up your concerns. Then go from there...

Re: turkey baster method?
I'm assuming you are talking about an IUI. They use a catheter to bypass the cervix and bring the sperm directly into the uterus. Very common and effective if there is sperm volume and motility issues.

Unless you have a medical reason (STD or such) or are doing some unconventional method (using someone else's sperm) there is no reason to use a turkey baster. Technically it could work (I know someone who used this method for medical reasons) and got pregnant but realistically it makes conception more difficult. Besides doing a medical IUI the best way for the sperm to make their way up there is to DTD the old fashioned way. There are some positions that work better than others though

Agree with all of the other ladies. Plus, if you've been trying for "a while" it might be time for some tests. An RE would be a good next step.

Unless there is a problem with BD, it's probably better to BD. Sperm is killed easily, even by water. If you do it, make sure everything is clean and dry. Maybe you could buy sterile items and only use them once. As others said, IUI would have a better chance because the sperm is prepped and inserted into the uterus. Also, if you have been trying for a while, it's good to get some tests done. Good luck!
