I give your friend a lot of credit that despite everything she is dealing with, she is still trying to do the right thing by the dog. I hope that someone is able to find a suitable home for the dog.
I'd have to believe that I would do the same. My dogs are my life and for now, my only "Babies". If the day came that I did have children and something this traumatic happened, I couldn't just toss them out. Making the decision to raise and care for a pet comes with responsibility. And this is part of it.
I know a lot of people disagree, but that's ok. Everyone does what's right for them.
I agree with you so much. I don't blame the owner for wanting to rehome her pet vs wanting her pet dead. To me thats part of being a pet owner who truly loves their pet through thick and thin. They can bite, they are animals and always will be. Bad things do unfortunately happen. I she can find a suitable home for her dog, it must be so tough for her to have to do this.

I didn't mean that I faulted her for trying to rehome the dog. Often in these situations, you hear of the dog being put down very quickly after the incident.
I've never been in this situation, but I hope that (unless the dog had a medical condition that prompted the attack and could not be treated), I would be able to at least try to find a more appropriate living arrangement for the dog.

I def didn't take it that way. I was agreeing with you and took it as though both of us agreed with you!

The baby is doing ok. No signs of pain. I *think* they go to the Dr. today? or sometimes this week to check how he is healing.
I'm pretty sure they still have the dog. Safely put away from everyone while they try to find the right place to send her. The dog, P.S. who is acting like nothing happened every time they go feed her and take her out. Happy, tail wagging.
I don't understand what happened. I hope they find a reason for it all. It's really scary. The other day I was laying in my Rottweilers bed with her, petting her, kissing her. Then I thought to myself, what if she snapped right now? I'd be dead. I never had that thought with her in the 6 years she's here.

Do you know if they took the dog to the vet? My female has been very snappy, mostly at my male. She has bitten him (not breaking skin but still). Turns out she had an ear infection that needed antibiotics. I knew she had been on edge moreso for some reason.

After reading this thread and the other about the aggressive dog at a neighbors fence which included stories of dogs that attacked, I feel like I've been on edge with our dog this week too. He has never ever shown one ounce of aggression and he is such a love with everyone he meets, but I've had the same thoughts of what if he just snapped right now...what would I do (esp when DD is near).

I'm glad to hear that the baby is doing okay.
Is it possible the dog thought she was playing with him? Like maybe she thought he was a puppy and that's why the dog seems fine now.
Try not to stress too much with your Rottie. I think we always need to be aware that, as much as we love them and as much as our dogs are trained, etc., they are still animals. It's possible for something to trigger even the most docile animal, but that doesn't mean it's likely.

See my dog is like this. I don't trust him with children or strangers for this reason but he's a wild man when it comes to playing or when he's super excited. He grabs our sleeves and PULLS, enough to rip. He's a very rough player, always has been and he's 9 now but still the same. People think he's aggressive in a mean way but its actually a crazed excited way. But I always make sure when my DD was a baby she wasn't face level with him, and now as a 5 year old, she can handle him if he gets rough with her. But he is a small dog so obviously much easier to control.

Re: Friends Dog attacked her child. Need Info
I'm so glad your friend's child is recovering! I can't imagine how traumatized she must be over it. I give her a lot of credit for not going straight to the euthanization route.
I have a friend up in Canada that rehabilitates dogs with severe issues to prepare them for adoption. I've emailed him to see if he has recommendations on US rescues that use them. He just got a female dog to work with all the way from Mexico. 4 homeless men were keeping her and "using" her. The details are horrific.
Posted by PhyllisNJoe
he was waving and then the dog just lunged at him. No rhyme or reason. She was holding his other hand while it happened. She then choked the dog out to get her off and then as she grabbed the baby and tried to run, the dog bit her too. Totally unprovoked. She is so in shock with the whole thing.
I've read quite a bit from trainers and dog psychologists that there's always a reason. Just not one that our human minds immediately recognize or understand. We care for our dogs like part of the family, but they should be treated as animals with instincts and psychological fears or needs as well, that are different than ours. My dog used to freak out when I came home with my hood on. They don't understand hoods and clothes, something so simple to us. It's amazing how they try to learn our language, more so than we try to learn theirs a lot of times.
Herding breeds are extremely intelligent working dogs that seek "jobs" to have. They need mental and physical challenges and can present problems, just like a lot of other smart and athletic breeds. I'm not insinuating that your friend didn't properly care for them, but they can be more challenging than other breeds.

Friends Dog attacked her child. Need Info
This dog will bite again no matter what home he goes to. A friend of mine had something similar happen with her rescue. She had numerous trainers, rehomed him with her parents where there were no kids and he got out of the yard and bit again. Some dogs are just aggressive by nature, especially rescues where you have no idea of their parents temperament. I'd rather put him down on my own terms than have a shelter do it or another owner in the future

so scary - the dog may indeed thrive in a home with no small children but full disclosure is definitely needed. good luck to them

Re: Friends Dog attacked her child. Need Info
60+ Stitches ????
isnt the child going to have terrible scarring on their face ?
This was more than a bite or a scratch.
The child waved at the dog and this was the dog's response ? This dog attacked a family member and a baby at that!
I'm sorry, but Ive had dogs my ENTIRE life. I think for the safety of everyone in that house, the dog needs to be put down. How could you keep the dog in the house knowing next time it could be worse ? Or rehome the dog knowing that this dog could seriously hurt/kill someone. What if you rehomed the dog and found out 2 years from now the dog hurt someone else ? I wouldnt be able to live with the what ifs. Knowing I could have prevented this.
This story scares the crap out of me. My two year old lost his footing last week and fell over my 12 year old dog. As he was standing up, my dog knocked him to the ground, took his paw and shoved my son's face into the carpet and gave him a low growl. I assume it was a dominance move but unacceptable. I'm taking my dog to the vet today and will do a checkup & full bloodwork. I'll be telling the story to the vet to get a professional's opinion. But Im on the watch now. I cant risk something happening and knowing I could have prevented it.
