It is always appropriate to feed your child. A law exists to protect this right. A Law enforcement officer should know as such. I don't even know how people can argue this.
It is so upsetting to see this women's character being judged. She was feeding her child!! What does making placenta smoothies have to do with anything?!

I am incensed that anyone could argue that e could legitimately defend himself by saying he feared being accused of staring.
Incase you're referring to me, that's not what I said. I said the fear of accusation is a legitimate fear. Not that such a fear justifies how he handled the situation. I think if he did feel afraid of being accused of staring, he should have asked the woman to let him know when she was finished, or something to that effect. This wasn't an emergency situation where he had to act immediately.
Truthfully...was referring to the chief and department that backed him up. I don't find the fear articulated in the article at all legitimate.

Again. if the officer was SO uncomfortable or nervous or whatever, he should have told her to take her time finishing feeding her baby and he would take her statement when she was ready. Period.
.
He is an officer responding to call that may be about someone in a potential danger. He in NO WAY could say "take your time, I'll step over here and wait and until you are done". Not only does he have other calls to respond to but it could have put her or her children in danger if there was a safety hazard. And likely he would have been put through the ringer if he did that too. This poor cop can't win.

100% honesty...I'm getting sick and tired of how many people always make excuses for the officer in a situation or automatically try to explain away or back the officer.
Maybe the explanation is simply that he's an asshole. Sometimes...officers can be assholes too. Sometimes, officers can be bad people too. Sometimes they can be uneducated, uninformed, ignorant etc. They are human. Sometimes, they aren't in it for the honor...sometimes it's just a paycheck with benefits and pension. What he said violated her rights...it's as simple as that in my eyes.
Maybe he really didn't know any better...but if that's the case then this is an eye opener that LAW ENFORCEMENT personnel need to be better trained on the laws and how to handle certain situations. These people are trained to work with hookers, drug dealers, murderers etc...if a little breastfeeding boob is enough to distract them from their job or make them uncomfortable maybe it's not the right job for them.

He wasn't uncomfortable b/c he found it weird or wrong, etc. The article posted states he was afraid of being accused of sexual harassment/staring at her boob. That's a legitimate fear I think he SHOULD have as an officer with a job that is often a target for accusations should they do any "wrong".
And as a target they do have to cover their bases for the risks they run doing their job. I see this statement he made about covering up simply his way of showing he was being professional being that she was exposed.

unfortunately his lack of training and knowledge on bfing rights still puts him in a position to land a harassment complaint...
that's not to mention that the statement made re: being afraid of a sexual harassment complaint could be something he was coached to say upon reviewing the complaint made against him.

Well considering he probably was going to be accused of something either way in this senario dealign with this person, I would think he's better off getting a complaint about simply asking a woman to cover up than a complaint that he made sexual advances or ogled a woman.

He probably shouldn't handcuff any females. You know...just incase they claim he touched their a$$ inappropriately. Or pull any woman over with a low cut blouse. Just incase they claim he was looking at their chest.
And I guess he knew this woman's history before going on the call. Knowing she was "crazy" and all according to some people on Newsday

Re: Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding
I just think if he was truly afraid of sexual harassment accusations there was a better way to handle it and say it. "cover THAT up" doesn't sound as nice as say "I need to take a statement from you, would you prefer if I give you a moment to cover up? I understand you need to feed your baby and I don't want to make you uncomfortable".
"cover THAT up" sounds more like someone who is disgusted than someone trying to be courteous.

Re: Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding
Flame me all you want. But I am a woman, who believes in breast feeding in public. However, I do feel uncomfortable if I am talking to someone and they are breastfeeding and they are not covered up. I would never say anything to them, but I do want to get quickly out of the conversation and look anywhere but their face.
I am not sure if this guy was being an a$$ or not, but I do understand how he could have been uncomfortable. Especially being a man.
Is this a lawsuit or just a complaint? Because if this is a lawsuit, IMO it is ridiculous.

Re: Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding
I'm sorry...and I am the BIGGEST supporter of the police--never had a bad experience-always trust and appreciate 'em...BUT:
IT DOESN"T MATTER if he is an a-hole. It doesn't matter if he was uncomfortable.
He is a police officer. He serves the public. He has to obey and respect (and know) the law.
It's like if a teacher is uncomfortable around people of a certain race. Is it because they're racist? Ignorant? An a-hole? IT DOESN"T MATTER. It's still NOT OK.
They have to do their job and teach and respect all of their students. They have to serve professionally and not violate the law. The rest is noise and nonsense, and no one can dignify a failure to do so with any excuses. That's it.

I do know her and her history and what she has put people thru what you are reading on Newsday is correct information. In her twisted mind this played out exactly how she wanted. who response to there own story on newsday SHE DOES, She always seems to turn things around and put it on other people. She is driving her children around with no license cause she hasn't paid child support.
IF anything he could of called for a female police officer which alot of them do when they do have to pat down someone of the opposite sex.
we can all go back and fourth on this breastfeeding or not is he wrong is she right blah blah blah
all I'm saying is she is crazy and a liar I know first hand what she has put a family thru and still is.

Do you seriously think that they cover EVERY SINGLE human right in the police academy? It would take FOREVER to train.... if you take ANY job, there will never be someone that knows EVERY SINGLE THING about the job... I'm a nurse, I don't know everything about healthcare.... i'm sure in your career you don't know every single thing either...
Its frustrating that people on here think that police officers have to be perfect at their jobs.... no one is perfect, we are human.
Should I ever need a police officer to help me...I hope they send the one that is more knowledgeable about serious legislation then the right of a woman to breast feed in public...
This site seriously makes me laugh.....

Re: Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding
breastfeeding in public is one of those hot button issues that has received a lot of publicity...so yes...that is a topic I would expect to be covered. I never said they should know EVERYTHING under the sun...but I think that's one that should absolutely be covered. Why? because people often get kicked out of places for breastfeeding...If the owner of an establishment has a dispute or calls the police over this, which I assure you probably happens more often than we know... as an officer they need to know the law in order to properly handle those situations. So...laugh all you want but expecting an officer to know basic civil rights doesn't seem like too much to ask. We're not asking him to know every international law or administrative law...this is basic civil rights here.

This is a hot button issue in YOUR WORLD....and maybe you've seen it more so lately in the public eye because it is of interest to you... i'd be hard pressed to think that this is on the mind of most cops...I think they go about their day thinking nothing but "please let me make it home to my family tonight".... Either way...I get that she felt her rights were violated, but if her intention was to make sure the public was aware of the rights of breastfeeding moms, she sure as he$ll doesn't have to sue the police department to do so.... smells greedy to me...I think she is just seeing an easy way out of her seemingly tough personal circumstances which seems to point to a shi&tty character...

I hate this argument and have to respond b/c I just think it's ridiculous.
If that was their only purpose, pretty interesting that women use them most of their life for purposes other than that (and it feels good for most I assume).
We can say the same about a vagina, it's only purpose is for menstruation or birthing a baby. But we all know that's used mostly for purposes other than that…I think most of the female adults in the world can attest to that too.Using it way more for enjoyment than for birthing a baby, that's for sure.
And let's not even talk about the rest of the body parts, such as the mouth is for talking or eating, but we all know that it's used for other purposes. And there are other body parts that perform some pretty important and gross bodily functions (see the toilet plunger thread and clogged toilets), yet some people use theirs for sexual purposes...
I think the arguement about what breasts are really for is a ridiculous one (not saying it about you, just mean the statement in general). Breasts are sexual for most people, even if they happen to also be able to feed a baby sometimes.

You seem to know her, and you are repeating all the other things I have read.
I read also that she had a suspended license. It's pretty ballsy (or crazy) if you ask me to bring attention to yourself and make a report against a police officer for this nonsense, when you have issues with the law and abiding it yourself. I also read things various other things with her and the law that I believe are likely true. And why does this matter? B/c where there is smoke there is often fire.

Oh FFS.
Just because they've been sexualized in more recent times does not mean they were always meant for that purpose. Their #1 purpose in the animal kingdom, which yes, we humans are part of the animal kingdom, is to feed children.
Now, let me go back to the reason I'm awake at 2am - using my breasts to make food for my child. And for now and for the rest of the foreseeable future, that is their sole purpose.

Re: Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding
Ita with this!!!! I think ppl are always thinking to knock the cops for using their judgement for very quick on the spot decisions, unfortunately for them a lot of the time these decisions not only have to be made on the spot but they are decisions that can affect their careers and private lives forever....not many jobs can say the same and yet ppl on the outside that have no idea what a job like that might be like day in and day out still proceed to knock them put them down and criticize their choices.....I mean I would like to see these same ppl make on the spot decision when a perp has a gun in your face .....these same ppl that criticize are always the ones that say "but why didn't he just shoot him in the leg or arm to stop him why did he have to kill him" ya know why? Bc cops are taught to aim at the biggest part bc it's the easiest target and it will definitely stop the person ....and I don't know about anyone else but if someone is pointing a gun at me (if I was a cop) or my family member (if he/she were a cop) I know that shooting for a leg or arm would not be the first priority .....just like if this woman were trying to start a case of harassment cops have to be very careful bc in this day in age one statement one accusation can end a career .....yes every one has certain rights and yes bf in public is a right ....no one was there once again to know why the cop might've been threatened enough to say cover up like I said before in this thread what if the bf was already complete when he said cover that up.....what if she was just sitting there with her breast hanging out as a way of trying to make him feel uncomfortable and to actually bring about a harassment case .....so just like we have the right to walk down the street if you're doing so in a reckless manner or doing something to someone else etc etc than it clearly doesn't matter anymore that you were using your right to walk down the street
