Coming in early for work
Let's say you get paid by the hour. Let's say your start time is 9am. You like being early and sometimes come in 8:30, or 8:20. Your employer now tells you that you will not be paid if you clock in over fifteen minutes early. Fair?

Re: Coming in early for work
Yes fair. If you like being early that's good for you and hopefully one day it will show off your work ethic and will pay off!

Re: Coming in early for work
I think so. You were hired to work 9-? and thats what your boss wants to pay you for.
Would be different IMO if they asked you to come in early

Re: Coming in early for work
Fair. If the employer asked you to be there early it would be different but because you are choosing to get their early, they unfortunately, are not required to reimburse you.

Coming in early for work
Yes unfortunately it is. And they can adjust your time. I worked for a daycare and if you clocked in after 8:07 they changed it to 8:15.

Re: Coming in early for work
Fair. At my job, we aren't allowed to work over a certain # of hrs unless workload warrants it. Then it needs to be approved.

Re: Coming in early for work
absolutely fair. They have a payroll budget to adhere to and the work schedule / hours are done according to that payroll allowance. they shouldn't have to shell out more because someone came in early when they weren't asked to.

Re: Coming in early for work
Fair. My hours are 8:30 to 4:30.
The system actually will not allow me to punch in before 8:15.
Staying late also needs to be approved.
Fortunately, I have the type of job now where it really is reasonable that I complete my hours during the time I'm scheduled to be there.

Yes. I have worked at jobs where I had to clock in and wasn't allowed to do so until 15 mins before.

Re: Coming in early for work
Completely fair. Unless you are asked to come in early (or you ask to come in early and are given approval,) it is presumptuous to do so and think you'll definitely be paid for that time. Payroll would have big problems on their hands if everyone took it upon themselves to come in early (or take short lunches, or stay late) without prior approval of a manager.

Coming in early for work
It is fair. If a position is paid for a set number of hours you should not be paid more because you are choosing to go in early.

Coming in early for work
Definitely fair. I get to work almost an hour early each day to prepare everything I'll need for the day - when you're hired, you're given your hours to work. If you decide to come in early or stay late that's your decision. No one is forcing you to do so.

My job does this and I'm salaried. So annoying.

Coming in early for work
Fair. They have allotted a certain amount of $$ for the budget, and if your hours are 9-5 (or whatever) then those are your hours. If you like to get an early start to the day and beat traffic, that's your time. I would bring breakfast and a book with me and sit in the break room to eat and relax before starting the day.
