If you lost your mom at a young age, please come in

There is a new documentary on HBO Monday night about daughters losing their mothers at a young age. Obviously so close to Mother's Day I think I will let this one sit on the dvr for awhile so I won't be a hysterical mess, just a regular mess when I watch it. Here's the trailer.

Definitely will watch, thanks for sharing.

I know the way life works is you're bury your parents but it's very sad when you lose them young. It's like an exclusive sad club. I remember my aunt lost her mom when she was 36, I was 18 and she said to me "I know how you feel now, we are part of same group". It really hit me.

Wow, thanks for sharing this.

I am 28, and my mom is very, very sick; these types of things weigh on my mind a lot. I, like one of the individuals in this show, fear passing on the gene for breast cancer to any offspring I may have; I think I'll have to watch this.

I've always felt like I was in some sort of club. When I meet people that also lost their mom at a young age it's an immediate connection bc we just get it, when most people don't.

I lost my mom 3 days before my 14th birthday. It's still hard at times.

I agree. It is a sad, exclusive clubChat Icon

I was 8 when my mother was killed by a drunk driver.

I don't think I can watch.

Today, was a roller coaster of emotions...

First thought, May 9th... my parents' anniversary... then my head did the math... Oh Dear God... today was their 50th Chat Icon Both sets of my aunts and uncles celebrated that milestone as did my IL's... my father is the only one of his three brothers who couldn'tChat Icon

So I composed myself and went to the Mother's Day Tea at my children's school... running back and forth between their two classes listening to their darling presentations and cherishing all of their little presents to me.

I came home and the sadness hit me again late afternoon. I couldn't even throw together dinner.

Then, as I was putting my 7 year old DD to bed, she told me "F" from her class (1st grade) wasn't in school today. Her teacher told the class he would be absent because today would just make him too sad. His mom died last year... "F" was in kindergarten, his little brother, 3Chat Icon Chat Icon

And I nearly collapsed into tears... my heart just hurt for this boy, his brother and their father. I know all too well how hard this weekend will be for them. And how everyone else is celebrating, how isolated and alone they will feelChat Icon

It just changes your entire life, your entire being.

Please post how it was after it airs.

I'm so sorry you lost your mom at such an early age in such a tragic, senseless way. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was 20 when I lost my mom, I just realized the other day, I'm 39 now, my life would have been completely different had she lived. Not sure I can watch it.

I'm DVRing it. I'll be watching with my hand on the remote ready to shut it off if it's too much to handle.

I have mixed emotions about this. It has been 25 years since I lost my mother. She was also very ill for years prior to that. The emotions are still very strong, and I believe always will be. I will watch, but I may have to turn it off.

I'm 33 and just lost my mom this past March. While I'm not very young, I'm still much younger than I thought I'd be when she died. The emotions are still very raw, so I doubt I'd be able to watch this video, but thanks for sharing.

As for the posts that talk about being part of a "club", I 100000% agree. Since losing my mom, my sister and I keep describing it as being part of a club that you do NOT want to be in.

I would love to watch this documentary, but I also don't have HBO. I don't think I'd be able to make it through the whole movie.

It's hard for me to even sit through the movie BRAVE, which is about a mother and daughter, as silly as that seems.

I lost my mother in September at age 29. So while I know how lucky I am to even have those 29 years with her, it is a pain like no other.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to let my mom know. Her mom died when she was 10 & it's affected her in so many ways she can't explain. Her family just collapsed.

I know she found the book "Motherless Daughters" helpful.

My mom was 14 when she lost her mom, I was 27 when I lost her. I bought that book when she passed and I have yet to even open it. I can't bring myself to do it. I know they also have a book motherless mothers, which now I am. My eyes would probably be filled with tears that I wouldn't even be able to see the words.

I think for her it was about not feeling so alone. Like Rosie O'Donnell said about the "club"

I just finished watching it.
Some parts were definitely harder than others.
Rosie O'Donnell said something that stuck with me. It was along the lines of "your life was in color, after your mom dies everything turns black. You suddenly crave the past instead of looking forward to the future".
Anyone else watch it yet?

Chat Icon so true, losing your mom is a loss like no other. My dad is still around thank god, but it is such a different relationship you have with a father than a mother (though i do love him just as much!) I think it's the nurturing aspect, unconditional love and support. Moms (at least mine was) selfless and her children always came first. My dad was always more consumed with his own grief and loss to realize we were grieving too and still needed a parent.
I have to try and catch it - are they playing it again?

Re: If you lost your mom at a young age, please come in

Thankfully I still have my mom and I am so beyond grateful that I do. My cousin was not so fortunate. She lost her mom when she was just 12. It has affected her life immensely. I bought her the book"motherless daughters" and she did find it very helpful. Her life now is totally different in my opinion to how her life should have / could have been. Its so unfair and so sad and my breaks for all of you in this club. Its a terrifying thought to me that my kids would grow up without me ..it literally takes my breath away and I try not to dwell but the thought terrifies me as its life altering Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
