ADHD mixed type

We just got back from second appt at Cohen's. My head is about to explode from info overload but this is what she feels DS has.

Made a bunch of suggestions....primarily suggested I get on horn with school and request an inclusion classroom for next year. She said academically he's off the charts and it wouldn't surprise her if he became a doctor one day. Chat Icon

She said his issues are all social.

Also had the talk about meds but said that can be addressed whenever we feel ready.

I just needed to get some of this out, thanks for listening and if you are familiar with this diagnosis feel free to give me any kind of feedback/suggestions.

My ds also has ADHD mixed type. I have to say I'm surprised that he told you request an inclusion classroom when he's doing well academically. I forget how old you said he was and what grade he's in. I had an extremely hard time just getting an extra set of books for home and some special seating for him in a regular classroom, and he is struggling! Some dictricts just do not take it as seriously as others.

You have a lot to think about, but take your time, do your research, and breathe. Its a lot to take in. Joining the SEPTA in your school will also help.

Re: ADHD mixed type

I think because of the district were in and high level of diversity she is concerned that the behavioral problems are going to come out next year and he's going to get into trouble for things that are not his fault. I'm also reaching out to some friends who are teachers and what the pros and cons are for each setting.

Also feel free to share your opinion on meds. She is pro Ritalin. I know this is a can of worms for many but I am open to hearing it all. Also she was saying insurance can be an issue, she said most therapies too aren't covered......and meds sometimes......

I'm on the fence about medications. Not against them per se, but they may not be right for my child. He was on Concerta for about 1.5 years and it was working well. Then it started not working much at all. They tried adjusting his dose as he grew, and he started becoming extremely sad and withdrawn, spent too much time alone in his room (despite our efforts) and didn't want to do any activities and see friends. Then one time in anger he said he wished he was dead. I immediately pulled him off. The doctor convinced me to give Adderall a try and I immediately saw the same things happening. So we went unmedicated for about a year or so. Off medication, he's happy, funny, sings in the car, etc.

But we've been having some issues with grades, missed assignments, forgetting homework and his grades started to suffer. So we started over with a new doctor, and we are currently on week 2 of Vyvanse. So far, it hasn't been too bad. Definitely he is quieter, which I hate, but not sad. The second I see something I don't like I'm taking him off. I think he's entering a pre-puberty age where hormones are changing and that may affect things. He's turning 11 next month. I have alse been toying with the thought that he may have a sensory issue.

Wow, that was long. Sorry Chat Icon

Re: ADHD mixed type

No its helpful. She did touch on the meds you mentioned she doesn't like the side effects and that's probably why.....she said with Ritalin we can give more as needed.....

Oh, and so far most med have been covered. But since I'm on a 3 tier pharmacy plan, they have ranged from $35 to $75.

Ritalin we have not tried. Interesting that she talked about the side affects of the other meds.

Re: ADHD mixed type

Yeah the whole med thing overwhelms me.

I wish I knew some older people who had it who could provide insight.

Ugh I just typed a long post and it disappeared lol.

Join one of the special needs facebook pages. There are a ton of BTDT parents and they are all more than willing to give their opinions : ) lol. They are Long Island Special Education Parent Network and Our Special Long Island Kids.

As far as an inclusion class, look hard and research what you district has. Every doctor is suggesting inclusion classes and I have not found one district, except for maybe HHH that has a true inclusion class. The "inclusion" classes that are offered are more academic based and those kids that need the extra support for behaviors or social deficits are being tossed to the wayside. I am fighting that fight with my district right now and it's torturous!!

Re: ADHD mixed type

I'm glad I've had a few days to think.

For now we're going to take a wait and see attitude.

Especially with the meds. I'm not ready to put my 5 year old on meds. That will be a last resort, and we want to see how he does in K.

I also was in touch with the school and was given all my various options.

I think I'm going to request a meeting with the psychologist later this summer, but not go in with guns blazing requesting a special class until we see how he does.

So that's where I am at the moment.

Thanks for listening!

Re: ADHD mixed type

Mine they did IQ testing and a test to see how long he could focus/concentrate.

Also talk to parents about behavior and send home more paperwork to fill out about behavior both at home and at school.
