DD holding in poop

Anyone have any experience with their LO holding in poop. She has been doing this for the passed couple of months now. I give her Miralax every night so it's easier for her to go bc she was having issues with constipation. Now she will go only little bits thoughout the day and it causes really raw rashes on her poor butt that she screams when I change her. I stopped using the wipes only wet towels. I've tried butt paste, aquafor, triple paste and a&d and powder. I've bathed her in baking soda baths and the only thing that will clear it is when she hasn't pooped. Her ped thinks the holding of poop is behavioral. If you've gone thorough this what did you do to get them to get all the poop out at once! I'm at so frustrated.

Also she's 3 and not currently potty trained. Tried and she refuses! she peed once on the little potty and that was it.

Re: DD holding in poop

I went through this with my son. I ended up having to take him to a gastro. He told me to have him sit on the toilet same time every day (for him it was after dinner) & try to poop. Pretty soon they get used to going at that time, but you have to make them sit there, same time every day, even if they don't go. Not sure how this would work for you though, since you said she isn't potty trained. I also gave miralax once a day and I was told to change his diet. He was drinking apple juice and eating applesauce, was told to cut out the applesauce and change the apple juice to white grape juice. He loves peppers and I was told to ease up with those because they were tough to digest. This was over 4 years ago, I'm sure there was more, but I can't remember. I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck, I know how you feel, very frustrating. For my son, it was a control thing, too.

Re: DD holding in poop

You just described my 3yo DD exactly. We did Miralax, we also tried Pedialax with the ped's approval. We tried potty training a few times and she was doing well with pooping bc I could tell when she was trying. Pee was a major fail. So I was like you know what, she's not going to be in pull-ups forever, I'll put the potty away and let her tell me when she's ready. The ped was not concerned and said its a control thing and typical 3yo behavior. I don't want to push it and screw her up psychologically so I'm just waiting it out. But it is so so so so frustrating watching her struggle, changing a million pull-ups a day bc it doesn't all come out at once, fighting her to wipe her (she pushes my hand and clenches up so it's very hard to "do gentle").

All that to say, I can totally relate! Chat Icon

I just went through this with my dd. She was holding it in because she was afraid to poop. She had constipation problems from 1-2.5 I gave her miralax everyday but eventually I guess her body got used to it because it stopped working. She is also 3. I started giving her pedialax which helped better than the miralax. Then once she became potty trained it took a little while to get her to poop train. Now that she is poop trained she poops like a champ amd has no issues.

Re: DD holding in poop

My 3yo son was having this issue a few weeks ago. His tush was literally just open sores from pooping tiny bits all day long.

We decided to start potty training. We have been at it one week and BC D's is very head strong we are taking a slow and steady approach. Day 1 he was bare bottomed. Day 2 was partially bare bottomed and part pull up. Now we are in pull ups all day. He pees on the potty all day long (even though days 1 And 2 he was fighting me), but he won't tell me when he has to go. He says he likes his diapers better. But he is back to pooping 1-2x a day so his tush is all healed up. So no matter how long potty training takes at least he is not in pain anymore.

Good luck.

Re: DD holding in poop

My DD did this. Miralax daily and honestly training her to go on the toilet helped greatly, since the bearing down position forces it out.
