**Update - it was just reported in Newsday that she had a prior DWI arrest in January 2012 so she is a repeat offender**

Last night I had the honor of attending yet another DWI Sobriety Checkpoint with the amazing members of the Suffolk County Police Department -- our first line of defense against the offenders who choose to commit the violent crime of drunken driving.

This was my third checkpoint this holiday weekend and my fourteenth since joining MADD in 2012. I was present when the woman below was arrested - from start to finish when she blew through the checkpoint almost hitting several officers, to when they gave her the many sobriety tests that she failed - even when she got out of the car with an infant sitting in her lap as she drove drunk and (by her own admission) on several prescription medications... meds that don't mix with alcohol and have warnings about driving while on them. None of the five children were in car seats or had seat belts on.

The arrests made were only in about a two hour time span.

Thank you SCPD! And a huge thanks to NCPD as well who did a checkpoint on Saturday that was a success too. And edited to include the Troopers - how could I forget? ...a huge thank you to the wayyyyyy understaffed and wayyyyyy overworked New York State Police - they are the best of the best and worked alongside the SCPD on Saturday.

A 43-year-old woman with five young children in her car was arrested and charged with drunken driving after being stopped at a sobriety checkpoint on the William Floyd Parkway at Smith Point Park in Shirley on Sunday, police said.
It was one of five arrests made at the location by officers from the Suffolk County police Highway Patrol Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team -- or, SAFE-T -- with the assistance of county Parks Police.

The sobriety checkpoint was being conducted in an effort to prevent drunken driving accidents during the holiday weekend, police said, saying that a total of 1,077 vehicles passed through that checkpoint.

The arrests all took place between 8:30 p.m. and 10:40 p.m.

Police said Elba Ayala, of 100 Rugby Dr., Shirley, was arrested after she attempted to drive her 2010 Nissan Altima through the checkpoint without stopping. Another woman and five children, aged 7 months to 8 years old, also were in the car, police said.
An investigation determined Ayala was intoxicated, police said. She was taken to the Seventh Precinct and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law and with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Leandra's Law is named after Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed when a car she was riding in with six other young girls attending a sleepover party crashed and flipped on the Henry Hudson Parkway in October, 2009. The driver, Carmen Huertas, later pleaded guilty to several charges -- including second-degree manslaughter.
The law makes it a felony, even on first offense, to drive drunk with children under the age of 16 in the vehicle.

Also arrested at the stop were: Robert Downs, 57, of 64 Brookfield Ave., Center Moriches; Jonathon Rettig, 38, of 41 Neptune Ave., East Patchogue; Yaneth Rojas-Zuniga, 23, of 107 Seymour Lane, Shirley; Vivian St. Clair, 62, of 37 Laurel Lane, Shirley.
All were charged with DWI.

Police said all five of those arrested are scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.

Two women and 5 children in a Nissan altima which, last time I checked, was a 5 passenger vehicle. It's sad that this point is the least of the problem with this picture. Disgusting.

Holy hell. Not in car seats and 1 sitting on her lap! Thank god she was stopped.

What a disgusting piece of shit. So glad she was stopped before something tragic happened to those poor babies or anyone else.

I'm glad they caught her before she harmed those children or someone else.

Just curious- I dont know anything about stops- but why would she get multiple sobriety tests? Like if you fail one (or maybe even two)- why wouldnt that be it?

I heard they got a lot of people in Lindenhurst too, I think it was in the same spot where that new HS grad was killed by that other ******** last year.

there not her kids. another article I read said that I think 3 or 4 of the kids were the passengers children and the other were the friends kids.

Not excusing what the driver did my question is why did the passenger allow her children to get in the car with this woman driving. I can assume she was just as drunk as the driver.
