Spare keys
Long story short Dh and I almost got locked out of our house this weekend. A relative that lives 10 mins away has a set of our keys. But it made me think, should we have a spare key somewhere? On our porch? In our car? With a neighbor (not that we know any of them very well)

Spare keys
The logical answer is yes -- a spare key should be hidden somewhere for access in the case of being locked out BUT I can be a bit paranoid and don't necessarily love the idea of a key outside that not only I could find, but a potential home invader as well. It is for this reason we are thinking of adding a keypad entry to our garage. I know this isn't an option for everyone but we luckily have access into our house from the garage. I also like the idea that I can assign people entry codes for them to get it (dog walker, cleaning lady, etc.), but can delete them if I no longer want them to have access without going through the hassle of changing locks! Is this an option for you? We've priced it out and its much more reasonable than I thought it would be.

You can get that for regular doors too. DH installed it at a client's house. And a friend has it on her back door for her son.

Why not putting somewhere in your yard where only you would know - maybe in a shed, or taped under your bbq or somewhere like that

I personally don't like the idea of storing a key somewhere on your property. You never know who's watching your house and see you grab that key once...and then forever knows where your key is.
Once we move in, we're only a few minutes away and we can hold a spare key for you guys!

I hid mine somewhere recently and it came in handy because my DH locked himself out. He didn't even know it was hidden. You can hide it on your property in a spot that only you would know. Someone would have to really be spying on you to know what you're doing!

I have one of those on my house, and I recently installed them on IL's house and my mom's house. They are very easy to install (only slightly harder than replacing a regular deadbolt or latch), and it makes it much easier for the homeowers or children of older parents.

we have a combination key lock box on the side of our shed. You can't see it from the street. It needs a combo to open the drawer to get the key. Dh just screwed it on the side and there you go.
It's simple and cheap

We got a Kevo instead of having to worry about spare keys. We each have a key just in case but otherwise we lock/unlock our door with bluetooth or a fob. It's seriously the best money we've spent. We just have to tap the deadbolt and it will lock or unlock the door. I can email a key to someone who needs it. For example, my sister is temporarily living with us and my mom is watching DD for the summer. I emailed them each an e-key and they are able to come and go as they please. When they no longer need it, I can take their "keys" away.
If for some reason our phones are dead, we have an actual key and/or we can use the keypad to the garage.

Everyone except DH has an iphone so it works for us. He uses the fob.

We have a key hidden outside in a spot that nobody would ever find it. They just wouldn't, at all.
When my DD was about 3 she locked the sliding door on accident while I ran right on the patio for two seconds to turn on the BBQ. After that, I made sure we had a spare somewhere on the property so that never happened again.

Keypad deadbolt is your friend. I never carry my keys anymore as all I have to do is enter my code. If this thing fails, i go in through the garage which also has it's own remote keypad. And for added security I also have a keypad inside my door to get into my garage.

I can assign codes to various vendors so I never have to give a key out (like weekly cleaning people). If I want to get rid of somebody, i can just delete the code and not have to worry about somebody having a key.

Hiding a key someplace in your yard should work. If hidden properly it is like a needle in a haystack and someone would really have to be spying to see where you have it. We also have an alarm , so even if someone found the key they would not be able to turn the alarm off even if they got in.
