Tipping on a GC

Have you added a tip on a GC for a salon? I got a GC for my bday for the local nail salon I sometimes go to (unfortunately they have gone downhill since new ownership so I don't go as much). Since I had the GC I figured I'd get a pedicure. When I went to pay I was saying to add money for the tip and they said they don't do that on the GC. No problem, thank goodness I had cash, but was surprised. I know they don't take tip on CC, but didn't know GC.

the money spent on the gc went straight to the salon. i would think if you wanted a portion of that to go towards gratuity, it would just be annoying for the salon's bookkeeping?

I tip separately from the gift card.

I've never even thought to tip off the GC balance. I have always just tipped cash.

Funny though that most the places near me allow you to tip on CC and I occasionally do that.

In college I worked at a fairly upscale restaurant and they didn't allow people to include the tip on the gift card. I thought it was a really tacky policy, especially since I had several customers not have enough cash to leave a decent tip.

I don't know how common this policy is but I don't think it's right. It's greedy on the establishment's part.
