When do you contact the companies for name change
We just received our closing date for next month
I got two very different answers when it came to changing the names on utilities etc
One told me to call before the closing so nothing is turned off
One told me I cannot call until we are closed and officially have ownership of the house
I would need to call
Electric Water Oil And of course set up cable
Anything else?

When do you contact the companies for name change
If I remember correctly I called like 2-3 days before and they said call back when you are in the house. It was no big deal. Congrats btw!!!!

Re: When do you contact the companies for name change
Call before. Have your agent coordinate with the listing agent so that the transfer is seamless. Sometimes the sellers will leave the utilities on in their name through the closing date and you pick it up the next day. Most of the time, the buyers start their utility accounts the day of the closing (so if you are closing 7/28, you set up the utilities accounts to start 7/28).
I did have a listing last year where the buyer forgot to call, and the electric was turned off, which delayed the walk through and the closing. So communication on this is important.
But it's very easy to call - and usually they will have a record showing that the seller is ending the account x date and you can pick it up. Much easier to transfer accounts than to shut off electric and have to turn it back on again.
You really just need to worry about water and electric (and natural gas if there's any). I am sure there is oil left in the oil tank and you can always decide later which oil company you will use and whether you will have a contract, etc. And the incidentals - like phone and cable - can be done later.
Congratulations!

Re: When do you contact the companies for name change
Thank you for this post! We should be closing 8/5, and I have no idea what I'm doing lol. We've been chatting a lot with the sellers, they're awesome, should I just call them you think?

When do you contact the companies for name change
I did it the day before I think. We only had about 2 days notice so I couldn't do it too far

Definitely call before so nothing is shut off. They will also want to do final readings for the previous owners.

When do you contact the companies for name change
Call the day before! We forgot to call the water company and they shut off the water and we had to pay to get it turned back on.

When do you contact the companies for name change
We called before by 3 days and still had "almost" issues if the previous owners hadn't given an extra 3 days to their side of the notice.

Call before but tell them the closing date. The sellers should have also been directed to leave everything on an extra day after closing as a courtesy just in case.

Re: When do you contact the companies for name change
I called the day before my closing date (which was last week). All utilities did not have any issues switching to our name. I didn't bother with oil because we plan to shop around.
I wouldn't call to far ahead because your closing date could always change.
But, keep in mind to call to schedule someone to come for cable installation about 2 weeks prior to when you want it installed!!! They book up fast!

This is what we did - we called a few days ahead and just told them what the closing date was (once that was 150% confirmed), and it all worked out.
