For those with a paver patio...
is there sand or concrete as the base under the pavers? i've gotten 3 quotes and 2 use sand and 1 uses concrete. the one with concrete is more money but it sounds like the better option. also, i hear if you install cambridge pavers over concrete it voids the warrantly. anyone have a problem with this?
ETA...i'd also like to hear from people who had theirs installed over 3 years ago. the concrete guy told me people who use sand usually don't last past 3 years.

For those with a paver patio...
Our patio is over 10 years old and in concrete and looks brand new. We are adding to the patio and doing it in concrete.

I have concrete and rebar
sand goes on top to fill in the cracks
if they don't do concrete the pavers will shift, stuff will grow in between and you will want to do it over

thats what i thought but I know Fernando doesn't use concrete and his clients love him! i think i'm gonna go with the concrete guy

I had a paver patio in my 1st house without concrete for about 5-6 yrs before we sold it. Never had an issue with it shifting. But we did have some weeds come through. But would either spray of just pull them out.
Never really much of a problem.

This is not true. It can be done correctly both ways.

For those with a paver patio...
We had our patio and driveway done 2 years ago and they did a layer of crushed concrete and a layer of sand. My DH puts more sand down once a year to refill all the cracks.

This is not true. It can be done correctly both ways.
Agreed. I had two of my houses done both with an aggregate layer with sand. The first house was done 18 years ago and still looks great. No shifting. I also fill in with sand every spring. Never an issue with grass or weeds growing between.

For those with a paver patio...
My DH installed tons of paver patios from 2001-2006, without concrete. All of them still look amazing, he's received continued feedback from those clients over the years. Both techniques work when done properly.
Sometimes on driveways or around new construction where the ground has not fully settled concrete is a better choice. For the average patio RCA and sand is the way to go. That's the technique pavers were designed for. You've got to trust your contractor, check their references.

Stuff still grows if you have a concrete base (have seen it first hand).
If they are just using sand, yes it will shift and find someone else.
They should be using gravel, stomped down, crushed granite stomped down and then sand to level as they lay the pavers. We had it done like in our previous home and nothing shifted. They did a cement border to hold the edge in and kept it square. They also didn't use regular sand on top of the pavers, they used a special blended sand that when you wet it it basically turned to concrete. Nothing every grew between.

I just asked DH he does this for a living as well.
He said ours is RCA and crushed bluestone.
I hope I got the terms correct. He was giving me a lesson but it's 7pm on a Friday, not much is sticking.

Yeah this is basically the strategy he was talking about. I hear the term blend constantly.
