Huntington to Stamford commute 4 days a week
Anyone ever do it?
One of my family members was offered a fabulous job in Stamford. The only problem is he lives in Huntington. Last night we were with a large group of people, many of whom commute via the LIRR into Manhattan, and many of them feel that this isn't the worst commute in the world. Am I the only crazy one?
My family member insists that if he leaves at 630 he can be there by 800. He does, however, acknowledge that driving home is trickier.
I was very surprised that everyone didn't agree with me and was curious as to what the general feeling might be, especially if you have ever done a commute like this. Even my husband, who has commuted for many years, feels it's doable.

Huntington to Stamford commute 4 days a week
My neighbor does it. He drives and it actually takes him less time to get to work than dh who commutes via lirr to the city.
You just never know what you're going to get with traffic and driving is the better option over train.
With that said, my neighbor is also looking to move to ct.

That's what I kept hearing last night. Even my husband who commutes also commutes to the city agrees.

Re: Huntington to Stamford commute 4 days a week
I commute to Stamford from roslyn 2 days a week. You have to leave by 630 the latest of traffic will be horrendous. It takes me less than an hour in the morning which is less than it takes me to get to NYC. The commute is expensive with the tolls, but my job reimburses me for the cost. On the way home I leave by 3 pm and I am home by 415 and there is some traffic even at that time. Either you have to leave at 3 or you should wait til 630 to leave for the best ride home.

Thanks. That's kind of his plan. He's hoping to really be able to work from home 2 days a week and work later the other three days. Maybe it's not so bad after all. I'll tell his wife. She will be thrilled.

Huntington to Stamford commute 4 days a week
My cousin has a dental practice in Stamford, and he lives in RVC. He said it's literally 50 minutes door to door if he leaves by 7. On the way home he said traffic can get nutty, but if he leaves early (by 4) it takes him about 1hr. 20 mins on the way back. hope this helps!

It does. Thanks. I guess I've learned something new. I was shocked that he would consider this commute, but it doesn't sound worse than commuting into manhattan which he is currently doing, especially if he doesn't have to do it 5 days a week.

My brother had a similar commute. It took him about 80 minutes door to door at night but only 55 minutes in the morning. He stuck with it for about 3 years then got an apartment in CT.

Re: Huntington to Stamford commute 4 days a week
i do a shorter commute and i hate it - i go from east meadow to the bronx. leaving at 7:45am, i get to work at 8:30am. leaving between 4-5pm takes me an hour and 25 minutes, leaving between 5-6pm takes an hour and 40 minutes. i never left after 6pm...

Thanks for the response. It seems everyone's experience is pretty similar. I guess he feels the LIRR sucks too and, for a better opportunity with the potential to have some work at home, he's willing to suck it up. BTW, he concedes that getting over the bridge is the worst part and feels once you're over it Stamford is no big deal.

Re: Huntington to Stamford commute 4 days a week
I commute to Stamford from Holtsville. I was doing it 4 days, now i'm down to 3 thanks to being able to work from home. Been doing the commute for 5 years. Leaving at 6:30 would get him there around 8...but it all depends on the traffic, not only on Long Island, but in the Bronx, and at the CT border where it backs up. I leave at 6 and am typically at work by 7:20ish on a perfect day with no traffic. It is amazing how much traffic picks up on the LIE between 6 and 6:30 though. My advice is...get a Prius. The amount of time that will be saved by hopping in the HOV is worth it...and the money saved on gas is awesome. Dont forget the tolls too.
If its a great job and the money is good, tell him to take it! Message me if you have any questions...i'm a pro at that commute!

Thanks for the reply. What time do you leave Ct. In the afternoon? Have you ever taken the ferry? Is that even an option?

I leave work at 3:30 since i come in early. It rarely takes me less than an hour 45 min. Its usually 2 hours. However if he left work around 5 or 5:30, the traffic will be a little lighter by the time he hits the LIE. Every day is different.
In terms of the ferry, its not an option for me. If you drive your car on, it costs around $60 each way, then you still have to drive from Bridgeport to Stamford. That commute is probably worse than sitting in traffic on the LIE. He could walk onto the ferry, take the ferry over, then take the train down to stamford, and either walk to where he works or take a taxi. But in total, thats a few hours of commuting.
A last option...is getting a boat lol j/k. But seriously I have a co-worker who lives in Oyster Bay and gets a ride from his friend on his boat when he comes to the office.
My only option is to drive. I have a co-worker who lives near me in Holbrook but we work different days and leave at different times so we cant carpool.
