What's wrong w our fish?
We have a 10 gallon tank w 2 guppies, 3 neon tetras and 2 red eye lantern tetras.
1 of the lantern fish is acting strange and looks off. It's mouth is gaping open and it is quivering (it doesn't close), its gills are also quivering, it's eyes are bulging, it looks bloated and it's scales look fuzzy. Is it time to flush the fish? We are worried it will infect the other fish w what it has. Does anyone know?
TIA

Re: What's wrong w our fish?
all I know about fish is to feed every 2/3 days otherwise the waste causes them to float or turn on their sides. Once I started doing that and using a filter my fish got better
Parakeets of the world in Rockville center are great and usually now what it is or what to do..

I forget what it's called but that's a sickness. I'm pretty sure u can buy these tabs to put in the water to kill the sickness so the other fish don't get it but it's probably too late for that fish.

Re: What's wrong w our fish?
You can also treat ick without chemicals. I have done it successfully before.
Heat Treatment for Ick
But I don't think that is what your fish had. Ick is just usually lots of white dots on the fish. Your fish sounds like it had a fungus with a condition called fish bloat.

Re: What's wrong w our fish?
It's probably Ich.
Is it a new tank? If so, you need to cycle your tank.
Expect more Ich. It's really contagious. I cured it a few times, but it was with a heartier fish. I bought the treatment, raised the temp, and used aquarium salt (not table salt!). I'd also vacuum the gravel, because that is where the Ich spores drop off to.
Let me know if you have any questions!
ETA: you know a previous poster was probably right. The fuzzy that you describe was probably a fungus. That being said, I'd do a 50% water change and aquarium salt is your friend. Also, don't change the filter medium!

Oy! Thank you! I will tell dh. The tank is only a few months old.

Well, if it is a few months old, the tank should be cycled. But if you changed the filter medium, then the cycling will start all over again. Also never wash the medium under tap water. If you must, just rinse it in the aquarium water.
I'd get a pH kit. You want to watch the ammonia and NitrIte. At the end you want NitrAtes.
This link is good: http://www.wikihow.com/Cycle-a-Fish-Tank
Also, white clouds are hearty fish, but I do not recommend using fish for cycling. Neons are really sensitive. I've never had much luck with them.
