Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
...and so it starts. DS just started kindergarten. This morning one of the moms asked if my son would go to her sons birthday party on saturday. I know this mom to see around school - have never been to her house, don't have her phone number etc etc.just to chat and talk to. SO she said "just drop him off at my house at 9.30 and my husband and I are going to bring him with the other kids to **** ( an outdoor farm) which is about 45 mins drive away. Then we will be bak at my house around 12.30 and you can pick him up from there. I was like ..she will most likely have 7 kids in her car.
All the other moms were "great...I will drop my son off etc" I was thinking " no way in hell". I know I could suggest driving my son there and meeting them but I kind of get the feeling she does not want this and that is fine. Thinking we will just bow out as I am just not comfortable. I think for 5 year olds there should be an option for parents to drive and stay for the party right?
What say you?

Re: Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
At that age parents should 100% be driving and staying with their kids. I'm pretty lax about most things and this wouldn't fly with me. Either I drive my kid and stay to supervise him or he doesn't go.
In this case I would say sorry I forgot we had a family obligation/soccer game/ whatever, sorry he can't make it.

Re: Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
Thank you...I know the rule is"go with your instinct etc etc" and ultimately even if you all responded with a"dont be silly let him go" I would still go with my gut but it is nice to hear other moms who feel the same as this morning standing with 4 other kindergarten moms I was the only one that was shocked!!! the others were all " wow how fun...sure!!" and I do like to know I am not the only one.
As it happens we do have guests this weekend so I will use that as my excuse but if it happens again this year I will back out unless I can drive and stay. I cannot imagine ever wanting the responsibility of driving all these little ones AND taking care of them at an outdoor place. There will only be 2 adults present. So with wanting to go on rides, the bathroom, snacks etc I don't know how they will manage it.
Thanks

Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
No way. I wouldn't leave him alone at a house of people we don't know and I definitely wouldn't have him getting in a car with someone driving I don't know. If she doesn't want me to stay, he doesn't go.

Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
like OP said..go with gut. I would appreciate the invite but unless I can take my child myself I would decline. I wouldnt even feel comfortable driving someone else's child for that matter ..that far and not being close to the parents. I would reach out to her and say you would drive your son..see where that goes

Re: Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
Nope. Ain't happening.
ETA: I just received an invite to a movie night at DS school (also in K). It said in big bold letters "this is not a drop off event".
I chuckled thinking to myself, WTF is wrong with some parents.
DH took DS to a party once where a bunch of parents left their kids unsupervised. Thank goodness he was there to help and I was kind of annoyed for my friends for not having a backbone with the other parents.

Re: Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
The carseat situation alone alarms me. If it was a drop off to play at their house kinda thing id say ok. But no one other than me, DH, or family will be driving my kids around. Just politely decline.

I'm with you - thank her for the invite and say you already have plans. This exactly. I am pretty much an easy going parents BUT there is no way I am having my 5 yr old be driving 45 minutes away by someone I don't even really know. Plus I like to keep an eye on him.

Re: Kindergarten Birthday Party invite
I'm thinking this must be her 3rd kid.
I wouldn't drop off in Kindergarten for a party.
There were mothers that did & then played chauffeur with the older kids' sporting events.
