The Pros & Cons of Common Core Education
I have two kids currently attending an elementary school so I've been Google searching Common Core education. I wanted to know why it's being talked about so much. Having a child in special education will this kind approach have a negative impact on him? For the educators on here do you think this type of learning will stop and go back to the traditional way of teaching in the near future? I appreciate hearing the Pros and Cons to this here so I can have a better understanding of it. Also one last question even though the state approves it does the actual district have to go by it? TIA

This will absolutely effect your child in special education. The math is confusing, requires a lot of steps, logic, thinking, and a child that already struggles is going to struggle more. I see it in my son.
Public Schools cannot opt out of CC. Only private schools can. I just saw a sign at a school near me (Christian school) that said "Common Core Free". THAT is appealing to me!

Re: The Pros & Cons of Common Core Education
Common core in and of itself isn't the problem, in my opinion.
The problem is the monopoly of curriculum companies, data sharing, and the amount of importance placed on the state tests.

THIS EXACTLY ! The common core standards are not the problem. The way they are being FORCED into implementation, is the issue !

Yes, this, all the $$$$. The standards themselves are good, IMO, though I can really only speak comfortably about the 6-12 ELA. I think it's really important that kids are taught to read for a variety of purposes, across a variety of texts, with focus on stamina. At first I was unhappy about the shift away from literature (which is still included) but then I remember the struggles I had with college level text books- I spent a lot of time figuring out how to read them because no one ever explained to me how it was different.
My DD in second grade is bringing home math that makes no sense- but she gets it and her teachers believe this approach will pay off. I am trusting them and hope they're right. The kids currently in K-1-2 are the luckiest because they're getting the rigor from the beginning- it's really tough to catch up the older kids because the bar has been raised so high, probably too high IMO.
On a happier note, her teacher shared the ELA units they will work on- literary and informational- and they sound awesome, really fun and interesting.

I agree.
Yesterday I was speaking with someone who is a teacher in Hempstead.
She was saying the same thing....the problem is that the majority of students have issues not to mention they are getting many of the immigrant kids in the media who don't speak English and have often not been in a school even.
She said their district, the # of kids in the classroom too is unmanageable.
DS is only in K so it hasn't affected him that much yet, but I would also venture to guess that the more resources a kid has, the better they will do in an educational setting. And a big resource is support and those involved in their life/education.

I totally agree with this. DD is in second and has been with Common Core since the beginning. She loves her writer's workshops and enjoys all the lessons. The math, well we just switched programs this year, is a bit crazy but the kids get it and that is what is important. I think parents have more of an issue with common core than the kids and sometimes we need to back off a bit. I also think that it is harder for the teachers because of data collection and such but if the kids are learning more, then I'm all for it.
I also find it very sad when I see 1st and 2nd graders saying they dislike the common core. These kids have no idea the difference between common core and what the curriculum was prior to that. Its the parents telling them not to like it and I find that such a disservice. But that is my own little vent : ).
