Preparing an 8th grade ELA demo lesson for a MS in Queens - can I please get any advice or recommendations from NYC teachers (or anyone for that matter)? Admins asked that a "Rigorous 8th grade lesson" be prepared. Please point me in the right direction - any advice appreciated :)

close reading is a big thing these days... perhaps you could do that

You could always get a passage from engageny. They gave some of the passages and questions from last year's ela. There are some pointers there on next steps to get kids to answer the questions properly... that could be utilized as well.

I have to think of some other ideas since they left it pretty open.

You have to love the word "rigor".

Anyway, an excellent lesson to do as a demo is one that focuses on close reading. The Achieve the Core website provides some excellent lessons that can help you with the lesson. Provide students with an annotated (you may have to explain the concept of annotation depending on the students) close reading passage and have them work in groups and share what the person does well in terms of their annotation. Have them determine what the idea of close reading means based on what is annotated (You want to make sure that the lesson is student-centered).

I'm at a MS in queens. What curriculum do they use? Model your lesson based on that . Most likely either Teachers College or Expeditionary. If it's expeditionary go on engageny and modify a lesson on there. If TC - pm me.

My MS doesn't use either. We use scholastic code X
