Transportation Issue

My DS goes to pre-K by bus. He is picked up about 45 minutes- 1 hour before school starts and comes home 45 minutes- 1 hour after school ends, originally he was dropped off 30 minutes after school ended. I want to sign him up for a program that starts 10 minutes after he gets off the bus, but he needs time to eat lunch. I cannot pick him up from school, and the bus company is not willing to work with me at all. I was answered with "other people have babysitters and things to do, too." I completely understand that, but he is third on the bus in the morning and last one off. Just 10 minutes earlier would help me.

The program would be to help him with social skills, which he needs. Any advice on what I can possibly do besides not send him to the program?

Ask for busing to the program directly if it's local?

Well you are saying he gets home in time, with 10 min to spare but not enough time to eat lunch.
Can you pack him a snack that is specifically for the bus ride home each day? A sandwich or some fruit, etc. so he can eat on the bus and have that hold him over until this program is finished?

Re: Transportation Issue

I would just pack a sandwich and a juice bag and let him eat there.

I do this normally because DS is a picky eater and it never fails we are some place and he is hungry.

Just make sure no PB&J.

I did this once at a random group event and I thought some woman was going to take my head off.

There is really nothing you can do with the bus. They aren't going to change it based on your schedule. I would pack a lunch and just have him eat it in the car. We do this all the time for snacks/dinners because DD doesn't get off the bus until 4:15 and all her programs start at 4:30/4:45.

Re: Transportation Issue

I know you said you cannot pick him up from school. Not sure why but that is your only option if you want him to do a class that you are limited on time. That's what we all do honestly, when our kids have a class after school and the bus would come too late. It's up to you, if the bus doesnt come at a convenient time for you, the only option is for you to pick up your child OR your child can't take that class. You and many people are in that same predicament when it comes to after school optional classes, whatever they may be for.

Re: Transportation Issue

Thanks BargainMama, but he has to eat lunch, and he is not allowed to eat on the bus.

Re: Transportation Issue

SHOPAHOLIC, sometimes he comes home on time, but he mostly gets home at 12:30...the program starts at 12:25. I mentioned in the pp that he is not allowed to eat on the bus. Thank you though!

Re: Transportation Issue

Thank you for the response. I will have to ask if he could possibly bring his food there, if he can go. I did ask if he could come a little late, and I am waiting for the director to respond.

I forgot to press quote for the responses...this was for MorningCuppaCoffee! Chat Icon

I learned that today! Either way, he would be late to the program. Just waiting to hear if they are okay with him going late.

I can't pick him up because my other DS receives therapies at home. If I could, believe me I would! DS that attends pre-K gets services at school and is pulled out often. The program would allow him to socialize more, which he needs. He always feels like kids are mean to him, and as a mother it tears my heart apart to see him so upset and to hear him tell me no one wants to be his friend. Hope that helps understand my pov.

If the bus company told me they would try to see what they can do, I wouldn't be so desperate to find a way to make it work. They just flat out told me nothing. I am tossed with not helping my son and asking for any kind of help...I choose the latter.

Re: Transportation Issue

Do you have any family that can pick up DS one day a week? Or even a babysitter that you can pay?
