Fun Activity for kids while parents can exercise
I saw a sign while I was dropping off my little one at school this week. A physical therapist is offering an adaptive class at retro fitness in syosset for kids with special needs and is encouraging parents to use that time to work out at the gym. I rarely get time to workout and I am thinking about taking advantage of the time. Has anyone taken advantage of this program? Thoughts?

I haven't but my only concern would be if he had help or not.
As far as gyms go, this is often the complaint I hear about gym kid programs/child care programs....staff kid ratio.
It's even more important with special needs.
Can you call and ask?

Re: Fun Activity for kids while parents can exercise
I actually did end up calling yesterday to get more information since I was interested. So I found out a lot..
I think this woman is doing it the correct way. She is a doctor of physical therapy who has been working with special needs children for many years. She said that a lot of her kids had amazing gains when they were in group settings so she felt there was a need for a program like hers.
I hope I don't butcher the way she explained it but I will try to be as detailed as possible. Since she is a Pediatric Therapist the programs core is designed to have a medical and rehabilitative fun structure. If I decide to move forward she wants me to complete a detailed questionnaire about my son and was even willing to speak with any other service providers treating my son. She also wants me to bring my son in for a play date (seems like an evaluation) so she can gauge how to structure the class he will be in. Depending on the needs of the children she will have more assistants in the class. So it seems that since the needs of the kids determine the ratio it is set to a level where it needs to be. I was concerned about leaving my son the first few times and working out but she mentioned if parents wanted to they can participate.
The program is new and she is renting the space from the gym and has no affiliation with the gym. It is just an added benefit that us parents can take the time to work out there. But we have to pay for a gym membership if we want to use the gym to workout while our kids are taking the class. Otherwise we can participate in the class, run an errand, or just watch.
I hope this helps!
