PLEASE Help, LICE Related
I teach Kindergarten. I was just informed that a little girl in my class has Lice. Her Mom said she had been scratching her hair for three days and took her to the Doctor yesterday who confirmed it. Not only am I upset for ME but I brought my little girl to work with me on Friday and I am DYING as she played with this child.
Here is my question....what can I go out and get today for a preventative treatment for my daughter and I? Do local drugstores sell anything or even Sally? HELP! This is a first for me and I am unfamiliar what to do!!
Thank you very much!

PLEASE Help, LICE Related
Ugh we dealt with this is dd's class early this year. As far as I know it was just 1 kid that had it. I RAN out and bought fairy tales shampoo, conditioner, hairspray and leav in cond. it's supossed to work. It's a little $$ but it's worth it to me lol.
There's not much you can do at this point besides watching your dd to make sure she's not scratching.
It's so nasty. I hate it.

Even if my daughter isn't going back into my class I should get all this or is it too late as if she caught it it happened already on Friday?
Thanks

personally I love Fairy Tales stuff. I use the leave in conditioner. Its a repel. I actually like the rosemary / mint smell and so does my daughter. It makes combing her long hair so much easier.
Altho I love my daughter's hari down, I always have it pulled back.
A few things. They love clean hair. They are a bug, you can't blame the kid who had it, they probably didn't know. They like hair on the scalp. Don't share combs, hair accessories. Once they are in, they are in. There is no incubation period. You either have it or you don't. Prevention is the best but if they come, they come. If AJ ever gets them, I am sure I'll be annoyed that I have to vacuum and steam everything but I'll be sure to never say a word to AJ. Its biggest issue is the social damage, in my opinion.
However, if they come, I've heard this. Fairy Tales combs are better than any other Flat iron to kill them off. Every toy, sheet, item must be cleaned in HOT as it can handle water If it can't be washed at least stick them in the dryer (toys) to be heat. I also think there's a ziplock option.
Good Luck

Re: PLEASE Help, LICE Related
Just went through this. Got a call that someone my DC was closely hugging, etc had lice. I am of the mindset that I do NOT want to put ANY chemicals on my DDs hair, the thought of that upsets me greatly so I did not run out to buy anything.
Well we use Suave Rosemary Mint shampoo. Whenever she bathes and I use it too. I carefully checked my DD entire head (watch Youtube videos on how to do this). I know I checked every single inch. Didnt find anything. Went about our business but checked her daily for about 2 weeks - 3 weeks. She never got them. This was almost 2 mths ago, never got them.
Oddly enough when I was shampooing her hair about 2 days after the incident, she pulled something small out of her hair in the bathtub. I don't know how she felt it or what it was (I looked with a magnifying glass and could not make it out). So in my mind, I wonder if that was one lone bug that got in that the SUAVE mint shampoo overcame (supposedly lice don't like Mint or Rosemary).
As I said, she never got lice. I am amazed to be honest, since the kids were hugging each other, etc. So I have to say I wonder if the Suave shampoo really does naturally help ward off lice.
You can go to Fairy Lice Mothers and get a head check for $25. I didnt do it but thought of doing it. I just figured I Would deal with it if it happened because I refuse to dump harsh chemicals on my DDs head. That scares me.
good luck!

The nurse gave a talk recently at a PTA meeting. They like clean hair. She recommended not washing your child's hair every day. She recommended hairspray, which they don't like.
We use the Fairytale shampoo, conditioner and spray . We spray scarves, hats, coats, and bags too. If is preventative only, won't get rid of them f you already have it. We have been luck but every so often I hear a class has it. Interestingly the principal said it often goes around at those "diva/dress up type parties where they do all the kids hair and nails.
You can get Fairytale stuff at BBB, Harmon and several other stores. It is easy to find.

Poor You and you DD.
You can comb through her hair section by section with a lice comb to see if you find any or their nits/eggs attached to hair shafts. That might make you feel better. She'll enjoy the attention. It takes a long time to do right. Be sure you have a good light to see clearly.
Also if she does have them, put her pillow and stuffed toys into garbage bags, seal them carefully with duct or packing tape and leave them there for a month to kill any bugs that may have gotten on or into them. Putting them into a hot dryer first can also be helpful to kill them, but they would still need to go into plastic bags for a month.
Buy a vinyl pillow cover at BB&B to use on another pillow for her to sleep on so that the bugs do not get into it as she sleeps and reinfest her later. A normal pillow case goes over it. It will sound and feel bit crunchy, but it will only have to be used for a month. I also put vinyl mattress covers that zip completely around mattresses on the bed. Then I tape over the zipper. Anything inside will die off eventually. I leave them on a long time - several months.
Good luck.

Re: PLEASE Help, LICE Related
DD had lice 3 times last year. It was just going around and around her classroom. The fairy tales stuff did not work. By the time she had gotten it a third time, we were using the Rosemary scented shampoo, but that obviously didn't work either.
The last time she had also given it to me. We went to the Fairy Lice Mothers in Deer Park. They are experts and I learned a lot. Lice do not jump. DD is a big hugger, and that is how she kept getting it, head to head contact. The school nurse said the best way to prevent it is to have them wear a ponytail everyday and talk to them about not hugging each other or sharing hats. Do random checks on her scalp. The eggs are laid close to the scalp and are oval shaped, translucent color. I have DD look down and I spread her hair out and check down the scalp from the top of her head to the base of her neck. I am sure there are YouTube videos to show you.

The fairy lice mothers said that this is a myth. The eggs cannot hatch unless they stay attached to a warm scalp. Also, if a bug does make it's way off the hair, onto a pillow or something , within hours of not feeding, it is so dehydrated, it will normally die off. It cannot survive without feeding every few hours. Gross , I know. But it's not necessary to bag everything for a long time. Maybe a day, but those bugs move quick and it's not likely they will stay in one place too long (wandering onto a pillow, etc) and it's unlikely they will find their way back to a scalp before they die.
HTH
One thing that did work when DD had it, was wrapping her hair in olive oil overnight, it did smother them.
