Spinoff to Exercise Post: If you didn't exercise before you got pregnant

Did you start once you found out you are pregnant? They talk about the benefits of staying fit during pregnancy, but did you jump on that bandwagon? A friend of mine told me her dr said it isn't safe to do heavy exercise (like long distance running) if you didn't do it before you got pregnant. But, low impact is safe. Thoughts?

I stopped exercise when pregnant.
High impact and cardio have been linked with early miscarriage.
I know plenty of people may exercise, but for me, it's not worth the risk.
I am a generally active person.

I'd stick to walking and mix some prenatal yoga or stretching in a few days a week. Best to ask your doctor if you want to go beyond that. But a 30 minute walk everyday is a great way to stay active and energized. You definitely don't want to overexert yourself during pregnancy.

Lo-impact is generally ok, as long as your doctor says it is. My doctor was big on all pregnant women keeping active, mostly by walking daily. It's good for your muscles, circulation, and overall health of you and the baby.

I wouldn't do anything hi impact if you weren't already doing it, or anything that may raise your heart rate too much. I did cardio and lifted weights through 2 healthy pregnancies.

I didn't exercise before or during my pregnancy. I only gained 23lbs and had a healthy 7lb baby boy last Friday.

I exercised before very frequently but stopped once i found out i was pregnant. To tell you the truth, i am just not able to keep up like i used to. I am thinking of lifting 10 pound weights though so that my arms stay toned and defined.

I exercised before & up to maybe 10 weeks but then i started feeling tired & sick. after that mostly i just did stretches and sat on the yoga ball. I tried yoga a few times but i couldnt breathe right and i also couldnt get the energy to walk much...

Pretty much the same. Never really exercised much and certainly didn't start when I got pregnant.
I ate like I normally did, didn't overeat or binge because hey I'm pregnant, and only really gained baby weight and lots of fluid.
I was back in my jeans in under 2 weeks and I my labor and pushing was fine

I walked until it got freezing cold. But I've had a chronic cough since October so walking in the cold would be detrimental. I just try not to sit to much and keep busy doing things. I've gained a bit to much, but that was the holidays and my sweet tooth.

If you were exercising before you got pg, then you can continue per usual, making sure your heart rate stays under 125bpm. But you should not start a new exercise regime after you get pg. If you weren't exercising before, I'd stick to walking.

I only walk. Which is hard enough. LOL.
I'm 5 1/2 months pregnant with twins and walking is getting really uncomfortable. Chat Icon

this is what I did, especially since my first loss began the night that I went back to the gym and ran. I still walked, but leisurely and did NO weights. I am now 10 & 1/2 weeks PP from a c-section and itching to get back to the gym.

I'm the same way with my jeans! I was SO excited! A little over a week after having my DS, I fit into my pre-pre pregnancy jeans lol (a size smaller than I was wearing before I got pregnant). I think continuing to eat the way you normally would helps because that's how I was too.

My RE told me not to run or do cardio/high impact. He told me walking only.

For my first I did a pre-natal exercise dvd.. this one.. well the only "exercise" i've been doing is chasing after and lifting my 2 year old Chat Icon

I would say walking is fine if you're not used to exercise.

i walk ALOT when not pregnant, but I am so sick the movement only makes it worse and really just makes it impossible to go for walks.

It is really upsetting to me. The same thing happened with my first pregnancy, but this is even worse.
