How do you get your DC to stay in their bed?
My DS is almost 2.5. We were able to buy some more time in his crib by lowering his mattress so it is almost to the ground. Well at the end of last week he found out how to get out and will use his upper body strength to pull up and get out. He will then run into my bedroom and climb into my bed. So needless to say he has been climbing into my bed and sleeping there for the past few nights. We have a full size bed in our "guest bedroom" and I was thinking of putting him into that and putting up those bed rails on the side but then I am not sure he is even going to stay there.
So I guess my question is, what do you do to get your DC to stay in their bed? Put up a gate at the door? I don't really want to make this a habit of DS getting used to sleeping in my bed. TIA!

If he wants to stay in his bed, he will. You can't "make" them stay in a bed. We used to just tell him, once in bed, you have to stay in bed unless it's an emergency or you have to go to the bathroom. We figured out he didn't like the door closed - once we kept it open, no more getting out of bed every night.

Re: How do you get your DC to stay in their bed?
DS # 1 started coming into my bed when he was that age too. Then he stopped coming into my bed on his own when he was about 4. That's right about the time DS# 2 started coming in. He also stopped on his own around 4... then DD started coming in.
She is going to be 8 soon.
If you come up with a solution, I'd be thrilled to hear it
Seriously though, nothing ever worked with any of mine. We tried gates, tried CIO, tried bringing them back in over and over and over.... finally just gave up and let them come in so that we could all sleep.
I kind of enjoy DD coming in still though... besides, she will be a teenager hating me soon enough

Re: How do you get your DC to stay in their bed?
Our situation was a little different because we were co-sleeping. Both of my boys hated the crib. My older one had no issues going from our bed to a big boy bed at 2y3m. We let him pick out sheets and he had his favorite stuffed animals in there with him. My younger one just transitioned to his bed at 2.5. He also got to pick out sheets and bring his favorite animals with him. I really had to talk it up about what a big boy he was and how proud I would be if he slept in his room all night. I also promised him a treat if he stayed in bed (a few mini marshmallows). I think the treat was the biggest incentive. It took several attempts, but he finally started sleeping and staying in his bed.

We put a gate on the door. It took a while to transition but eventually she got it. Napping was another story . . . DD never napped again once we took her out of the crib.

She's 3y3m and has only been in her bed for a month now. One of us lays with her until she falls asleep (not the best thing, but whatever) and once she's out, she's OUT. Theres a gate at her door so she doesn't come creeping down the stairs in the morning (our master is on 1st floor). We usually know she's up becuase she turns off the camera for the monitor!

My brother used to sleepwalk.
Even as an adult
My parents had to start locking his bedroom door when he was little.
This was the 1970's, mind you, so I'm not advocating their method

Re: How do you get your DC to stay in their bed?
both my dc at some point in the night end up in my bed. Often DD will fall asleep in my bed, DH will bring her to her bed and at some point during the middle of the night she's back.! lol she's 4.5...my 2.5 year old does the same thing.
Would love suggestions myself!

haha my DS did the same thing. He fell asleep in my bed and then I moved him back to his crib... well at 4am he climbed out and came back into my bed. We are going to see how he does in the other bedroom w/ the full size bed but I suspect he is still going to come back into my bed.
Well its good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this. Thanks for the advice all.
