Steps in house getting scuffed

I hope this makes sense...We moved into our house and had the entire house painted. Our interior stairs from the main floor to the upstairs are hardwood, but the backs of the steps (where your toes hit it going upstairs) were painted white from the previous owners. We repainted them white. Before we even moved in, the white was all scuffed up from people wearing their shoes going up the stairs. What do other people do to keep their stairs from looking so terrible? We're not going to carpet, so that's not an option. The only thing I've come up with so far is buying a darker color (beige? brown?) to paint over the white. The rest of the area is beige with white molding so I don't know if a brown would look funny and I'm afraid the beige would still show scuffing.

The Magic Eraser works wonders! Just don't rub too hard or the paint will start to come off.

I wash the risers and paint them when they get bad.
