Any Kofinas patients here?

I met with Dr. Kofinas last week to get a second opinion on my care for this pregnancy and I'm still a bit in shock from his findings!

A little background: I lost twins in 2013 when I went into labor at 21 weeks due to an incompetent cervix. Since then I've had a failed FET and a chemical from an FET. This pregnancy is a result of a fresh IVF cycle.

Dr. Kofinas found that I have MTHFR, along with some other clotting disorders, and he feels that they contributed to my loss. I'm now on Lovenox and Metanx along with some vitamins and supplements that he recommended.

The biggest shock of the day was that he found a second baby in there!!! Apparently, my embryo split into 2 identical twins! Unfortunately, Baby B appears to have stopped growing around 6 weeks (I was 9 weeks 3 days at the time) and it's heartbeat was only 80 bpm, but Baby A is measuring great with a heartbeat of 178 bpm.

I'm just so blown away that the other doctors I saw didn't see the other baby. It's clear to me that Dr. Kofinas is a very intelligent man and I feel very comfortable being in his care.

Just wondering if anyone else is/was under Dr. Kofina's care or if anyone had any input on him.

Fm me for the whole story, but I'm 25 weeks pregnant after 4 miscarriages (one at 20 weeks) and 3 failed IVF cycles with other doctors...all because of Dr Kofinas. He's my hero!

I love him and his office staff. His main concern is your baby and he will do everything he can for you and the baby. I saw him with DD and am now seeing him with this pregnancy.

He is a no BS kinda person and some may like that and others may not. I happen to like that about him.

You are in good hands!!

Re: Any Kofinas patients here?

I'm a Kofinas patient and absolutely love him! I have MTHFR and 2 other clotting disorders as well, he's the one who found them. I also have lupus antibodies which i already knew Abt. I'm on lovenox, metanx, aspirin, and a ton of supplements. I also had to get intralipid infusions which I finally was able to stop a couple weeks ago. Like you, I had IVF and transferred only 1 embryo however mine split as well but I lost my baby b at exactly 6 weeks :( I'm grateful however that this baby is doing so well and I have dr. Kofinas to thank for that. Your in great hands!

Re: Any Kofinas patients here?

I just had a baby girl on 2/19 and was his patient. I love him and his office staff. The sono techs are great. They scan you so meticulously. I had previous miscarriages and years of infertility so once I got pregnant I went straight to him. He monitored me closely and put me on a bunch of things that I believe kept me pregnant. He also caught my preterm contractions, short cervix and ultimately ended up needing a cerclage. He really monitors you. I loved being seen every 2 weeks. I felt it helped alleviate the stress of pregnancy after losses/ infertility. Congrats and good luck!!!

If you don't mind me asking how far along were you when you needed your cerclage? Everytime I go I'm contracting and I fear that I'm heading in this direction. Although my cervix is still long thank God but I'm afraid it might change. I'm currently 23 weeks.

I had my cerclage at 23 weeks. I started having the contractions at 19 weeks and each week my cervix shortened and was funneling even with bed rest, indomethacin/procardia.

Re: Any Kofinas patients here?

I'm so sorry for your losses. :(

The reason he may have been able to see it while OBs couldn't is b/c his machines are better. My OB sent me to him at 5.5 weeks b/c he wasn't sure if I had a cyst or a baby in there.

I was with Dr. Kofinas with my twins 2 yrs ago and both he and his staff are amazing. I love them. They check your cervix at every appointment which is usually ever other week. I was put on bed rest at 26 weeks with my twins and delivered them at 36 weeks. I also have MTHFR and immune issues. They are very thorough and you are in amazing hands with their office. I may or may not have gotten pregnant again because I missed going there. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA bed rest was due to shortened cervix but it was too late for cerclage by then. I'm 23 weeks now with a singleton and they said they will watch me closely at 24 w for changes. The hospital only allows cerclage until 26 weeks. Some may be 28 though.

When I went on bedrest and meds it went right back to normal in 3 days so it was just the weight of the twins. They aren't as concerned for me this time with just one baby.

I am currently a patient and 8 weeks pregnant. I suffered three miscarriages and I was referred to his office as per a friend's recommendation. I was a little overwhelmed with all of the information and procedures at first. I am on lovenox, all of the supplements plus intralipids therapy for natural killer cells. All is going well right now and I am grateful for Dr. K and his staff.

I know I keep repeating my story on these boards over and over but I pray that one day it will prevent my nightmare from repeating in someone else's life. Kofinas had me on lovenox and said I had MTHFR. The man put me through thousands of dollars worth of blood tests.. Kofinas said That I too, had a second baby! He forced me to rush into the hospital and undergo surgery in my first trimester, after the surgery it was found that Kofinas was wrong. There was never another baby! There was only one healthy baby. Horrible horrible shameful nightmare!
